Just a super player .. An E9 stylist that could stand toe to toe with the best E9 players of all time.. I got into his playing later than most, but when I did he became a favorite and he will always be a favorite.
his Sho Bud tone is THE standard.. Never heard better.. ...

Got to see Dickie up close about a half dozen times when he was with Jake Hooker. He was playing the "Rosie" Emmons Push Pull. Tone to die for. He was an enormous talent.

Never had the opportunity to meet the man in person, but he played with such emotion I always felt that I knew him.

Even tho' we know it's coming, his death just punches a hole in your heart. I never knew him well, but did get to meet him in his Millsap days, sitting in a small music store watching him play a black ShoBud for a couple hours. It was so ammazing the way he just became a living part of that instrument.
God's blessing on his family now when they need it so much.

a show somewhere in the midwest , dickey had a nice visit while everyone else tuned up. he did not touch his steel except to set his amp. every one seemed to be talking about the latest and fastest and the wildest of everything musical. during his artist's show he played so pure and simple, and solid, and beautiful E9 as if to create a clinic situation for all the talkers. almost a jerry byrd on E9. his 'ornery wink' stood out as they tore down along with his special goodbye smile. prior to that 5 or 10 years, he played behind so an so and played every trick he had gathered with a lot of force and volume. dynamics galore. same goodbye smile, less the wink. RIP, dickey will never be alone. kenx♫

Somewhere back in the '70s when Conway was touring as a four piece, he played Schroeder Hall in Texas. I made a point to be there, and took up a post on John Huey's side of the bandstand to watch and drool. I had been standing there quietly for about 30 minutes when I became aware that someone else was standing beside me...also watching John. It was Dickey. He and I stood there the rest of the night enjoying John's playing and talking. Quite the memory for me....
