I think in MHO, buddy is the greatest steel guitarist that has ever blessed earth. And i have so so so many favorites. But i think niels, that the secret behind the maestro emmons, is his touch. They call Jerry Bryrd the master of touch & tone. Very true, but buddy's touch is just....different, and heart felt. From his posture behind a steel, to his respect for others. You can't teach, or learn, how buddy plays. You can learn what he plays, but not how he plays it. If all i ever get out of the steel guitar community, is buddy's playing, then i'm satisfied.

(Apparently it did post the first time... It just didn't show up until now. Thanks for echoing my replies, Hook! I will say if any post deserved a multiple reply, this would be one. Sorry kiddies!)

Sid Hudson commented here a while back on how hard Buddy plays each note. It was just after the Hall of Fame tribute where Buddy said he liked to practice without an amp. It got me to thinking that maybe practicing with no amp pushed him to playing each string a little harder. So, I asked him.

Buddy's classic reply: "That's a natural response I have when trying to make the notes come out of the amp shaking their fist at the listener."

I have many times called Buddy Emmons the "Total Package". When you look at his playing level on both necks, fast or slow, all the licks he has invented plus his contributions to the tunings and design of the instrument, he has to be considered the best. The best player? Everyone has a different in opinion but to me I will always consider him the greatest player of all time. That Emmons style and sound got me hooked many years ago and still has a strong grip on me today. Oh I wish I could see him play one more time.

His touch and timing is mind blowing. When he plays he exudes such confidence, very inspiring.

Maybe my hormones are flaring up but I have to say that brought a tear to my eye.

I've been playing almost 35 years on a pretty consistent basis and I can say that no matter how hard try, I will NEVER acquire the touch, tone or taste of that man.

What a man.

Niels, the sound quality is so poor that I tried hard to listen through it but couldn't enjoy it very much. Here's one that for me shows all the qualities that folks have mentioned but in a decent mix.

I find it heartening that he looks at his feet now and then, thus appearing to be human.

I really love his earlier work with ET the best because I am such a huge fan of the old Troubadour, but to see the path of an artist continually grow on so many levels and to such astonishing levels of communication and depth is pretty rare in any field. I'd like to see his photography work, too.

Thanks for all the music, Buddy.

If I had to describe Buddy's playing with just one word....it would be 'TASTEFUL'. Yes to the touch, yes to the tone, yes to the execution, but without his immaculate taste, it all would have fallen short of the unattainable bar that he set for the rest of us. I never heard him play anything that I never wanted to hear again and again and again and.......

I feel truly blessed to have seen and heard him play in person on a number of occasions.
