I'm worried less about WHAT he plays than I am about his choice of baseball jersey. :?

Sorry I didn't know we had failed to give RR his Participation Trophy.

I did not care for his "country" stuff....quite cliched, didn't care for the tone at all. He needs to hear some Jernigan and Emmons.

Please feel free to flame my ass off mr. Gregory, but "he needs to listen to some Jernigan and Emmons" is quite possibly the dumbest comment so far in this thread.  (Do u really think he hasn't or doesn't listen other other pro's?) :\

Storm you have a way with words and "Please feel free to flame my A off" encapsulates the whole Forum experience and is among the most enlightened entertainingly interesting comments I've seen here in forever.

OK so RR has contributed a lot for PSG related to the youth of the US.
However it has little to do with him being a good player.
If Dennis Rodman had taken a PSG with him when he went to North Korea the whole world would know about PSG. Just saying

Stuart, could you define what makes a "good player" and tell us why you think Robert Randolph is not a "good player".

...and please don't tell us it's because he can't play like ___insert name here___.

Seems to me that the "Legg" boys are intent on arguing, solely for the sake of argument. Couple more pages, they'll be correcting our spelling and punctuation errors.

What's it gonna be next, boys? Clubbing baby seals?
Recipes for spotted owl?

Personally speaking, I love what he's doing on its own merit.. Forget that its pedal steel and listen to it musically… It will make a difference if you like the style of music or not so either way you will be biased to some degree.. Personally speaking again, I love this style of music so I am too, biased… In the clip that started all of this, RR just played a few stock country licks just for fun using whatever tone he had dialed up for some of his rock playing… I'm sure he has enough taste to change his tone or amp if he were to play a real country gig.. To me its really funny, and sad, reading all these post that are trying to somehow bring down what I consider a true artist… When most guitar players compare Chet, Jerry Reed, Jimi Hendrix, BB King and so on, they for the most part don't trash the players like this… Even if you don't like his style of playing, you should be buying his music and giving it to some young player, just to support the instrument… I try to buy every steel CD that comes out to show support and encourage the player even if I don't particularly like the their playing… Mainly I don't listen to steel music and try to get inspiration from other music even though I love the instrument… I'm glad I'm not a new player, I would take up spoons or something that at least has the support of the players… I know that everyone has an opinion as do I, but there is a way to find the things you like and keep the negative to yourself. If for no other reason, just to support the instrument… Just my 2 cents..

I said in this topic "I love what he does in his Genre" and I've never said he's not a good player.

Bo and I just state here what we feel and try to add a little humor and sarcasm mostly for entertainment since honestly most debates here are just plain silly including and especially what we contribute.

You would think folks after a while would realize that we are not relevant and would catch on to our unusual style of reply and stop hollering Troll every time we draw a cartoon or say something out of the ordinary on a topic.

We are much too predictable to catch anyone off guard.
You know what you're going to get even before we reply.

So in other words, if somebody doesn't listen to these guys, they have nothing to say musically that would be worthwhile.

OK, I get it.

Jay, thats great… It needs to be required viewing before joining this forum…

We all have our opinions about what is good steel playing but the instrument is doomed without players like RR taking a different road sometimes.. I hope we have many more like him that have his success even if the majority of traditional players don't like it…

Yes, it's very important to fit into a little box and sound like all the other players. He also needs to learn how to dress right, act right, talk right, play the right tuning, use the right tone, and play the right music. :\

Jay, that video is so good it deserves it's own thread!

Is there a thread with clips of all the traditional (S10/D10/Uni) steel players who can also play just like Robert Randolph?

I listen to those guys (except Julian) and I immediately dismiss the lot of them. They abandoned the trail that Alvino Rey laid down.
2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)
More amps than guitars, and not many effects

But he is the Paul Franklin of his genre. I don't think that is a stretch.
In my opinion, that's a VERY big stretch. :) When it comes to playing the steel guitar, RR could smoke me like a cheap cigar. But from what I've seen and heard, he does not have the skill that Paul Franklin has. Very few players do.
