Reloading Java

Somehow i uninstalled Java. Now a couple of sites won't work. I reinstalled it here.

Still the site i'm trying to use, (my medical records site) tells me to "Enable Java". Java's website says to turn off my firewall, and disable my anti virus software and then try the download again. Is that a good idea? Thought i better ask. I guess i really needed that java thing.

I'm not the resident security expert here, and one will chime in and give the definitive answer to your question, I'm sure. But my experience has been that I've never found my firewall or AV stuff to be the culprit when I've had issues like this. It's a common suggestion, and they may in fact occasionally be the problem, but it's just never been my experience.

I've always found the problems to be faulty or corrupt installs, incomplete uninstalls of previous versions due to sloppily-coded uninstall routines, things like that. And, even if the software is properly installed, a setting can cause a problem like the one you're having. Do you have the setting in the Java Control Panel checked so it's enabled in your browser?

Even though my PC is behind a router and my IP is supposedly "invisible" on the internet, it's my understanding that there are bad guys out there with "sniffers" running 24/7, just looking for open ports they can exploit as bots, etc. I refuse to disable my AV and firewall unless my ethernet cable is unplugged - just makes me uncomfortable.

Thanks Dave, ya know, i have learned a long long time ago, i'm not smart enough to do anything but the basics with these machines. Sometimes, honestly i really do have trouble even turnin it on. The smart guys like wiz, and jack stoner and a few others out there have told me. GEORGE LEAVE YOUR HANDS OFF YOUR COMPUTER! And they're right. Thats why i ask first. Bless their hearts they are willing to help me out, and i don't abuse there help. But i was just cleaning out some old files and junk i have on here, and oops.. So i really appreciate this section of the forum, and all those smart fellers and their guidance. I'm just a friendly hillbilly, with a limited education and formal schoolin. Much appreciated fellas. George. This may be a stupid question to some, but, di the site in question tell you to enable "Java" or "JavaScript"? They are radically different things.

If indeed it is Oracle's Java Virtual Machine, it is one of the most dangerous plug-ins one can run in a web browser.

Here is what I would do in this case. Install Oracle Java and only allow it to run as an on-demand plug-in in one browser. I would not use that browser to visit any websites other than you medical site and java.com. Operating as a Limited User account in your computer, close all other browsers, open the one with Java enabled and do what must be done. Close that browser, then do other things.

I uninstalled Java about a year ago and do not miss it. I haven't had any instances where I needed it.

Same here Jack. I sometimes get error messages about installing Java. I just move on and tell myself that I didn't need that program or visit that website.

No more time to troubleshoot this, but, what is your operating system and service pack, if any? What browser or browsers have you tried using to access the website in question? Are you logged onto the computer with less than administrator privileges?

Logged on as administrator. Using just Windows Explorer. Here is my puter info.

That site does NOT require JAVA. It requires JavaSCRIPT; two entirely different things! What browser are you using? If Firefox, you probably have installed the NoScript add-on, which disables JavaScript unless you approve that website.

I also tried it on my Win7, IE11 computer. Didn't get the error. I can't find anywhere in IE to enable/disable Javascript.

You might want to try different browser.

Internet Explorer is unlike all other browsers. It uses proprietary technologies not used by the other major players, like Firefox, Google Chrome, or Opera. In that vein, Microsoft has long ago decided that instead of running the common implementation of JavaScript - which is used by the majority of Webmasters on their websites - They chose to use their own interpretation called Jscript.

That aside, there is a place where Jscript (aka: JavaScript), Flash, Java, ActiveX and other "unsafe" scripting features can be disabled in their browsers. Here's where you will probably find that it is disabled in your browser (follow the mousetrails):

Internet Explorer > Settings (might be within the spoked wheel icon on the upper right, as in IE 11), > Internet Options > Security > click on Internet if not already selected. Look at the security level slider on the page. If it is all the way up at the top, all common scripting is disabled. If so, move the slider down one notch to Medium and Apply the change. Restart the browser and try your website again.
