Today I've had 4 0r 5 requests from forum steelers to be friended on facebook. I have talked to or have done business with all concerned and don't want to offend anyone but I am not a facebook person and really have no desire to participate on social media, this forum excluded. I don't really know how the requests are generated but again nothing personal just not my cup of tea.

How are you getting the requests? To the best of my knowledge, you only get requests when you have a facebook account, and the request goes to you there.

Richard, The requests come to my email account(AOL) but I recognize the names as forum members. As far as I know I have never had a facebook account.

Since it's people you have communicated with before (and you've never had a Facebook account), it's probably some type of phishing virus or worm.

If you were to open the emails, there's most likely a link for you to click on to "Accept the Friend Request"

Although it is wise to be cautious of phishing scams, I believe Facebook has an app that goes into the user's email address book and solicits all the user's friends to join FB. The thing is, it is done with the permission of the facebook user. Facebook asks 'do you want us to go spam all your friends' and the facebook member says 'yes'.

Sadly, there is no way to take away computer privileges from people who lack the fundamental skills or awareness to use their computers in safe and responsible ways.

FWIW: billy, in my opinion, you do not owe anyone an apology. But possibly these people who are wasting your time and bandwidth with the Facebook Nonsense owe you one. Just my plain old two cents (if that) worth.

I think one has to be selective as to the choice of "friends" on Facebook. If you get a request from someone who is a member of the Forum you have a dilemma: you don't want to offend them but you may have nothing in common with them other than your membership of the Forum.

Some people have over a thousand "friends". Be cautious about accepting "friend" requests from anyone who has many hundreds of "friends". If you do, then your posts will end up in all sorts of places you don't want them to. I've actually had to "unfriend" people I really like because they themselves are too casual about the number of people they accept as "friends".

I get friend requests all the time, and I always say yes, because I don't want to be rude, and then I ignore everything.

I think F-B is a gigantic waste of time.

No need to apologize to anyone for ignoring a friend request from any site, Google+, LinkedIn, Facebook, etc. These so-called "friends" just lead to more unwanted messages, more problems, more marketing, spam, etc. $:\$

It's not phishing or spam. Many people hit the little button, when joining FB, that invites everybody in their address book to join them on FB.
Just ignore them.

I get lots of friend requests, but they come to me in Facebook. I have never gotten a request by email.

Precisely, and that has brought me to the brink of "defriending" you, because so many "friends" makes you a liability to all of them, in that they all get posts about each other.
There used to be an advert going round about AIDS and casual sex, that every time you have sex you are exposing yourself to everyone that person has had sex with, and everyone those people have had sex with, ad infinity. It's the same with Facebook.

I only say yes if I know them or they have some kind of musical instrument in their profile pic. And sometimes not even then. I recently went through my friends list and deleted almost 200 friends because I never see any posts from them.

Warnings and concerns about Facebook and other media sites certainly have some validity, but for many people it's one of few, or the only, way they communicate about many aspects of life, including business. For many bands, promoters, booking agencies, festival promoters, small to large record labels, etc., Facebook is about the only way they communicate. The number of fans and their potential outreach are exactly what the bands, agencies, and promoters are looking for, and the easiest and fastest way to both connect with others, and measure or gauge the "draw" or appeal of the performer.

On a personal level, both through my participation on band sites and individually, I've re-connected with very dear friends and musical buddies, some from many years ago, who I'm very glad to be talking to again.

Yes, I did the same thing. When I first started on Facebook I accepted everyone who I recognised from the Forum, and from all my other activities, but within a short time I found that my friends on the Forum were reacting with my distant cousins on the other side of the world, and the only common connection was me, so I put two and two together. We all lead many different lives. I have a life as a musician, a life as a railway enthusiast, a life as a local historian, a life as a chess player, and a life as a family member, and I like to keep them apart. I don't even have my wife listed as a "friend". I need some privacy. If I accept everyone I know as a friend on Facebook it confuses everything for me and for everyone else that I have listed as "friends."

Unfriending people because you don't see posts from them doesn't make sense, because FB has a policy/practice of managing your newsfeed, dropping people from your feed, nearly at random. It's annoying, and I've not been able to figure out how to stop it or undo it.
I get all the "sponsored" and "featured" posts, but people I actually care about disappear.

I have to "re-friend" several friends that I want to keep and they post often. Then, all of a sudden, they are no longer friended. Facebook really sucks in that regard (as many others). I have reunited with many old (because I am old) high school friends, family that I haven't really kept in touch with, and musicians I have played with. It's also been a real good networking medium for me. Some of the gigs I have gotten, and some of the bands I have been in, have resulted from my FB presence.

Maybe it was they who unfriended you, rather than Facebook.

Alan, since he said he had to unfriend then refriend, he wasn't unfriended, but FB struck the friend from his feed. I've had several friends disappear, despite still being friends.

I think that the email account you use when signing up for facebook will let you know when you get a request and from that email you can accept it. A lot of people just make up an email for this but some may use their primary email address. Its common to gain facebook friends you never added or to lose them as well and for that I don't have an explanation or reason but Ive had it happen several times.
