Radio signal on my PC

Post by baxter vaughan »

I have never had this happen before. Out of the blue, I have a radio signal coming across
My PC. I cannot find where it's coming from. It slows the PC down considerably when it starts. I am running wireless. I've turned off the wireless access, rebooted the router to no avail. Nothing shows under task manager either. My desktop has no issues. My iPad no issues. Any suggestions would be very helpful.
Thanks
Baxter

PS: it is 2 stations bleeding through. Neither are coming clear. Very annoying!

Do you live close to radio broadcasters?

By "where it's coming from", are you saying you're unable to tell if it's coming from your audio system speakers or the PC's internal speaker? Or does that mean you're unable to tell what radio station(s) are responsible?

It's coming from the PC speakers. It's like 2
Stations fighting for the signal. It goes off &
The PC works fine. Them starts again & it
Slows to a crawl. Running Vista & had this
PC for awhile now. 1st time this had come
up. It not local stations either. I have installed
Avast and running a full scan.

Baxter, is this something coming from your computer (as from the internet) or coming from a radio source outside your home?

If it is internet based, then it may well be a virus or trojan. If it is from an outside source, you may need to add some rf chokes to the speaker cables.

These snap over the cables. If you can, wind a couple of turns of cable inside the bead.

What is the PC with the RFI? A Laptop or Desktop with external speakers? From your original post it would seem like its a laptop??

IMO, all the paid antivirus stuff leaves lots to be desired, and avoided. Been there, done that (and don't do it anymore).

At this point, as an Amateur Extra class license holder (like Scott), with a little familiarity with RFI, and from the description, I'm less inclined to blame intermodulation distortion (IMD), power supply-induced stuff, and similar types of interference, and I instead suspect malware - not something that outsiders can "wag" and be of much help. I'm bowing out.

I've got a bag of those ferrite clip-ons in my drawer, and from the info available, I just don't think they'd do much here.

Download and run Malwarebytes. It will ferret out malware/spyware. Antivirus programs won't find a lot of that.

I gave up on paid AV programs and just use the free Windows Microsoft Security Essentials. It is rated right up there with the best AV programs.

What you are facing is hard to troubleshoot remotely, like from a forum. I do a lot of support on some computer forums, including Dell, Win 7, Win 8, etc and there are some problems that just can't really be worked remotely from a forum.

I used to have a General Class Amateur license and a 2nd Class FCC Radiotelephone.

The "free" one is actually a trial of the full Pro version so it will do everything.
