Rhinestones and Nudie Suits

Post by Bill Duncan »

I'm telling my age, but I sure do miss seeing those "Country Greats" wearing their flashy outfits. Hair slicked back, dressed for show, and class all the way.

They could sing and play. They had the best musicians to be found, and musical material that could make you laugh, make you cry, miss your sweetheart, or Mama! They gave us our classic standards we still love to play. I never thought it would end.

Where are Earnest and Porter when you need them? Or Ray, or Jim, Teddy and Doyle, or Bill?

Wait a minute, Bill is selling DVD's on RFD.

They still wear suits....just a different source. Now you are not cool unless your wardrobe comes from the dumpster behind the goodwill. And you GOTTA top it all off with a plastic cowboy hat...........

Bring back Nudie suits - now!! :D

I saw one guy on stage last week who had about 1" of material holding his jeans leg together. The rest of it had the obligatory rip in it. Only in this case the 'rip' was almost all of the way around his knee. It just looked awful, and I almost gave him 75 bucks to get a new pair.

Those old guys had real stage presence and class. The youngsters these days look as though they have come on stage straight from the face of a coal mine sometimes. Its the same in the UK. I guess those of us from the older generation - old farts - just don't get modern fashion. :whoa:

I still think a band dressed in nudie/rhinestone suits would be more successful than a similar band dressed in t-shirts and crummy pants.

i got into country through daniel romano, who is pretty recent.

he's got the full nudie treatment here:

and suit but no hat here (and here he doesn't talk over the steel breaks):

daniel writes really great songs, and i really like what aaron goldstein plays on the steel.

Marty Stuart and his Fabulous Superlatives are still top notch with wardrobe, and real country music! They rule IMHO!

If you need to know what type of musician is Manuel's typical customer now, a visit to his shop in N'ville will tell you. His custom shirts hanging on the racks mostly have embroidered and rhinestoned marijuana leaves, pills, joints, etc.

Most likely those very expensive duds are worn above very expensive torn and bleached skin tight jeans and t-shirts that are not tucked in.

Just sayin'...

When people go on stage with shorts and sandals. I don't like it, no matter how good they are.

The most recent time I saw the Time Jumpers, that was Vince Gill's stage outfit, exactly! Plaid Bermuda shorts... that's right PLAID... and a T-shirt.

I never had the money to buy a Manuel suit, but, I did wear a lot of fancy Hollywood brand western shirts. Lots of piping, buttons and fancy designs. I believe Scully makes them now as "retro shirts". Unfortunately, I don't fit into any of my old shirts anymore, but, I still wear nice western shirts with my array of Stetson hats.
