Where to Get Steel Guitar CD's in Honolulu?

Post by Paul Honeycutt »

I've got family visiting Hawaii for the holidays. Where can I send them to pick me up a few steel guitar CD's? What are must haves?

Bobby Ingano's Steel Reflections is a fave, and his latest Steel 'n' Love won this years Hoku award for best instrumental CD. But Oahu doesn't have good music stores any more, just large box corporate mentalities that carry very little steel music. Harry's Music on Waialae Ave. is still local and may be your best bet.

Paul,

Just get them here, and save gas, time and frustration. They have the largest selection of Hawaiian CD's.

www.mele.com

Many book/record shops here have closed shop as online downloads have taken over.

We still have Barnes & Nobles at Ala Moana Shopping Center but they have really scaled down their inventory on CD's.

Is Woolworth pau?I used to buy all of the cassette tapes of Waikiki Records,
Hula Records, all of the good steel guitar music I could find. They didn't have much in the way of good CDs back then.
I still play those cassettes all the time.

Paul,

Here's a direct link to Steel Guitar music at mele.com

Here's just a number of CD's that I would get if you don't have them already.

Thanks, everyone. It's sad that there's not a good indiginous Hawaiian music store in Honolulu.

:D Hey, Ron,
I thought Harry's Music closed their old store and moved to a mall somewhere. Or do they have two locations now?

Wally, Harry's moved a few blocks Diamond Head from the old spot, smaller but nice and new, void of all that great history of the old building which has been gutted and completely remodeled.

Ron,

They moved Ewa(West)of the original building, down the road near McDonald's, not Diamond Head.

CD selection is way smaller than what they had at the original store.

Jelly's in Aiea is another option.
They stock Hawaiian vinyls too that are not available on CD.

Eh, just turn the world around, or reverse time and go back to the old store.

Try Hungry Ear Records in Kailua. Lots of used ones and used vinyl.

I stay in Kailua when I'm on Oahu. I'll be there on 1/7 for 2 weeks. I try to look as much like a local boy as I can. Alan Akaka and Greg Sardinha live there. As for CD's I agree with Derrick - get 'em on Mele.com.

Was in the Kaimuki area today so I stopped in at the new Harry's music to check out their CD collection.

Stock was really limited with CD's on a small 5X5 ft. shelf.

The store seems to be catering more to orchestra and band equipment.

I didn't get anything when my sweetie's brother's family were in Hawaii, but my brother went a few weeks ago. I sent him a message asking him to pick me up something. He said they were leaving the next day and wouldn't have a chance to go shopping.

As it turns out he and his wife stopped into an ABC store to get something to bring back to the hotel and there was a rack of CD's. He got me, "Steel Guitar Magic Hawaiian Style" with Billy Hew Len and Barney Isaacs Jr. I haven't listened to it yet, but it appears to be "16 instrumental versions of Hawaiis most favorite music."

You never know what you're gonna find and where you're gonna find it.

What's the chance of one of you guys dropping by Harry's 'NEW" store and grabbing a snapshot? JPG it via email to me????

I'd love to have it in comparison to the old store for the JBFC web site.

I found the CD a little "touristy" but the playing is top notch. Kudos to my brother!

The new Harry's music shop has closed, but the owners say they'll be looking for a new location.
