How many steels does it take?

I drove to Dallas and met the Carter folks one morning when they opened at 8am to buy my Carter. I then drove back to Oklahoma City where I had to play a theater show that same night.

The Carter was completely comfortable beginning with that first job, the only guitar I have ever played that didn't require an adjustment period.

That's a great story, Gene. It's also one I've heard from other Carter owners -- a real testimonial to their customer service.

36) mavericks...and still counting

2) marlens ..1 push pull, and one 1996 all pull...still have that one

3) mullen's 1 1991 sd-12, 1 1992 sd-10, and one 1 1990 d-10

2) jch's 1 1983 d-10...still shopping for anthoer mid 80s, or early 90's d-10,...and 1 1989 sd-10

3) msa's 1 d-10 vintage xl..(still have ) , and 2 classics 1 d-10, and one s-10

3) carters...1 d-10 blk (keeper) and 2 sd-10's

1) fessenden d-10 still have

3)emmons 1 d-10 push pull circa 1967, 1 s-10 1981 push pull, and one d-10 lagrande all pull

1) lennard sd-10

2) mid sixties zb's 1 d-10 and one s-10

i have to stop doing this...it's costing me alot of money

hmmm....mabe i'll just fix them and i won't buy any more steels....YA RIGHT

Wayne, thank you. You just made life a lot easier for all of us with wives. Now we can all point to you and say "At least I'm not like Wayne."

I'm really impressed that you have the room for them. Even if they're stacked to the rafters, you need a good sized space. How many are setup at any one time? To what do you attribute this obsession? Are you taking your lithium?

Well, I'm a pretty new player but I inherited an S10 Fulawka & bought a D10 P/P and I couldn't be happier with the combo! I'm glad I found a favourable set up early on, as I do not seem to have the ability to even think of selling an instrument!

I think they call it obsessive compulsive disorder. I'm obsessed with figuring out and playing well that John Hughey lick, and my comnpulsion is to get yet another steel 'cause maybe it's the guitar and not me that's keeping me from doing it well.

Isn't it odd that six-stringers don't feel any compunction about having eight-jillion different guitars, and it seems like people who play steel just say the guitar is irrelevant ("Buddy would sound great on a two by four with disentangled chicken wire stretched across it" or "John Hughey could play a kitchen cabinet with barbed wire on it" etc.)?

I don't know... I haven't had a chance to play enough stuff, and besides that I suck, but it is interesting...

I liked all of the PSG's, except one and I ain't gonna start any tone wars by saying which one it was!

A guitarist friend (Fred) and I used to have an agreement about musical gear. Whenever the wife asked "Where that that come from?", he always said "Bobby lent it to me" and I always said "Fred lent it to me". Our wives never talked to each other, so it worked...

Now I just say "Someone on the Forum sent it to me to try out!" Shhhhhh....

That's true, Jim. And I guess that's kind of the point. There's an attraction to steel guitars that seems to go beyond that of six string guitars or other instruments. Let's face it, a high quality six string instrument might go for $1,500 to $2,000 new -- but a top quality new steel guitar goes for twice that easy. Yet, steel players buy and sell and own multiple steels in suprising numbers. It's an interesting phenomenon that I cannot begin to explain.
