Old Styled Rock and Roll with steel guitar?

Post by Fred Glave »

Can anyone think of any 1950's-60's styled rock and roll recordings/songs/artists with steel guitar?

Most of Bill Haley's stuff.
2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)
More amps than guitars, and not many effects

Here's three that I can think of right off:

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Teach Your Children

Tommy James & The Shondells 'Crimson & Clover (the album version)

Santo & Johnny, Sleepwalk

Does Conway Twitty count? He was considered a rock and roll artist for a while there...

I think some later Bob Wills qualifies... Boot Heel, Fat Boy Rag especially... Bob Wills' Boogie, Twin Guitar Boogie.
Too much junk to list... always getting more.

Dave Van Allen, the link to Brenda Lee with Buddy Emmons playing at the 1:22 and on, is what I consider a CLASSIC EXAMPLE of playing the steel guitar from a lead guitar approach and I love it.

Thanks for all the leads. We do a fair amount of 50's style Rock in our set and our bass player doesn't think that steel should be played in it. He's pretty vocal about it but he only likes steel in our country stuff. He wants me to pick up my strat for the rock. I've been doing it to keep the peace but I'd like to give some of this stuff to listen to.
