After my last hard drive crash, and the fact I will be updating my desktop to Win7, I have a question about backing up files.
I had purchased a 2tb external drive which is big enough to back up both hard drives on my desktop and the hard drive in my laptop and the external drive on the laptop (which I treat as if it were an internal drive to the laptop.
Would it be alright to just copy the root drive and all it's sub-directories to the backup drive, or will I need some sort of backup software?

Use the built in Image creation tool, under Control Panel > Backup and Restore. You can use it to save a complete system image to your external drive. This image can be restored to its as-saved state by running the restore function. You can also use it from a repair reboot, to restore a totally corrupted system.
