PC cleaners

Post by Harold Dye »

Has anyone had experience with these so called PC cleaners and if so are they effective. I see these advertized on tv and internet ads. They want to scan the computer and when it finds things that need correcting it will refer you to a page and you will then pay a fee to correct the problem. I am not asking for free services, but are these things reliable or would a better option be to take to a local computer repair shop. These PC cleaners say they will scan and speed up the computer, but do they, or will it create more problems down the road?

You can do the same thing for free, by downloading CCleaner from Piriform.com.

Some of the shadier online services may install backdoors or spyware, or bill you recurrently.

Many free programs, legitamate programs, will include options to install other browsers, tool bars, set your home page, etc. YOU have to be on your toes and look at everything on the page BEFORE you download.

All that stuff can be removed.

Jack makes a real good point. They ask you if you want to install certain programs or toolbars they are pimping as part of the install. If you are like I used to be, you just assumed they were part of the program you were installing. Then you end up with a bunch of crap you didn't want.
