I've heard some pre-release cuts from a new CD of his on Willies Place on Sirius/XM, may be this one, its duets with other singers and I wasn't impressed with it.

Bought the CD this weekend.

Fabulous.

Kudos to Tommy White... Great Job! Great Stuff

Hearing "Everything but You" made it a "must have".

IMO, you'd be much better off with the original artists recordings. With few exceptions, this sounds like ordinary bar-band stuff at best. Maybe that's what they were going for but if so, what's the point?

Thanks fellas', I really liked the music and thought the recording was fantastic, and not because I played on it.
Jack and Barry, sorry you didn't care for it. Like my grandpa said, "If everybody liked the same thing son, they'd all be after your grandma!". :)

Brilliant song writing, great singers, great pickers, shuffles, waltzes, and ballads with marvelous steel playing, and it's getting air play! What's not to love about it??

Hank Cochran, as a song writer, is almost impossible to beat. Many of his efforts are now country music standards, and rightfully so! Jamey Johnson, along with the guest vocalists are breathing new life into these songs. Kudos to Tommy White for his efforts on these recordings. His playing being the main reason I will purchase this CD

I figure this best way to "cast a vote" and "show support" of this, the real country music, is to purchase it. That is the only language the "powers that be" in Nashburg understand.

Nawww, I don't hate it. Keeping in mind that it's all been done better in the past, in this current age of lowered expectations, it's perfectly adequate. Only my opinions of course. :)

In my opinion, music isn't a contest of who did what better. There are different versions, and some versions I prefer, but when it comes to personal taste I don't see one as better.

The main point of this album, I believe, is to let another generation experience the songs of Hank Cochran. Many of these songs where on the radio some 50 years ago, and although it may be a shock to many forum members, there are some folks slightly younger than most of us here that have never heard these great songs.
The album has spent 5 weeks in Billboard Top 20, and has exposed millions to classic country songs they may have never heard.

It's kind of like the Jimmie Rogers tribute album that Merle Haggard did in 1970. Sure those songs had been done some 40 years before, but in 1970 Merle was big, and it got people into some cool Jimmie Rodgers music.

Oh and that review posted above, that reviewer needs to take a course in music history, because MANY artist have done tribute albums and not just as side projects.

I get where Barry is coming from. I feel that way sometimes about different things in life the older I get.
Theresa, I agree. "Subjective" is the most viable term on this forum! Hey to Greg!

Thank you, Tommy. Contrary to what Theresa said, I really don't hate "everything released today." I just didn't like this particular recording for reasons already stated in an earlier post. Tough crowd here..

Alvin, of the versions you prefer, isn't it because you think those preferred versions are "better" in some way? If not, then why do you prefer them? :?

Maybe they are better to me, at the moment, but I like so much music that I go back and forth between versions and can't always pick a favorite.
If it's a good song, with good players and performances, I have a hard time not liking it.
I also don't have a problem with you not liking it. If that's your preference than that's fine with me.

I don't really get it when someone doesn't care for it because those songs have been done before.
Good songs should be able to live forever and get reworked, played by others, and influence other generations.

I like it. I freely admit that I frequently prefer the sensibility of older recordings, and I definitely don't like every re-make of old music. But this works, to my tastes. I also don't buy the 'lowered expectations' & 'bar band' tags, as applied to this particular recording - I think it stands on its own (not that there's anything wrong with a 'bar band' approach, and this is a damned good bar band if that's the line you want to argue.)

To me this isn't about 'these recordings' vs. 'the original recordings' - I like both and have most if not all of the originals piled up in my old record collection. Of course, not everybody's gonna like it - but I hope younger musicians don't give up on recording these kinds of great old tunes just because there are some naysayers out there.

My take.

I haven't heard it, but I expect it would be worth the price for Tommy's playing alone. It'll be interesting to hear his modern treatment on these old songs.

Many times there are songs that I have really liked and never new they were covers, and when I hear the original sometimes I like it better and sometimes, I don't.

I think it comes down to which one you heard first and if it's a good song you like it anyway, but the first one you heard tends to be the benchmark of which you compare all the other versions.
