Having trouble with your picks staying on?

Post by Howard Smith »

I found the solution to keeping my picks on this weekend. Theirs a product called Sticky Picks, invented by the famous PSG player Wayne Hobbs. I found this by accident. You put it on your finger tips with the easy applicator type bottle, and within just a few seconds, your picks will be on tight until you decide to take them off, or really do something hard to break the seal. I have had no trouble keeping on my picks at all now. Even adjusting the amp, or using my picking hand for something, that would normally have me scrambling to find the picks that just came off my fingers. Many thanks to Wayne Hobbs for this amazing new product. You can find Sticky Picks at their website. I sure do recommend that you give this a try. It comes in a fairly big bottle, that will probably last me a year or more, and starts working in seconds. What a deal, and problem solved....Thanks Sticky Picks

I paint the insides with clear nail polish. It not only helps them stay on, but it protects my fingers from the drying effects of the zinc and the green of the copper

It's always nice to support a fellow steel player when you can, but I've been using Gorilla Snot since early 90's. It's probably a very similar product. A natural resin, I think. It will dry out over time too.

Sometimes, I take an empty Snot jar, small cosmetic jar, or some about half dollar size container with a lid and harvest some pine tar off one of the many pine trees in my yard. That works as well as anything else, but it can be messy if you're not careful.

With any of the "sticky" stuff, you always want to be careful of getting it in places where you don't want it, like on your bare fingers where you don't use picks, the pick blades, bar, strings etc.

I'll bet super glue would do the trick also. But then, it's awfully hard to pick your nose with picks on! :whoa:

Erv's got it. Stick the ends of your fingers in yer mouth. I tried this after I heard John Hughey did it, and it works like a charm.

Fred,
Yes, it's suprising how well that works.
I also find that it really helps to position the thumb pick also.

That's what I do too. John also told me about this many years ago. Can't get any cheaper than that. No gooey mess either.

Also, if there is a good looking woman in the crowd, sticking your finger in your mouth is a good way to get her attention.

Note to banjo pickers: lick the fingers BEFORE putting the picks on.
Hope That Helps

PS: There are only three banjo jokes. The rest are true stories

Licking your fingers is the best emergency solution to wandering picks.....but, if you are young enough to have small children at home, the best solution is using their glue sticks that they use in kindergarden classes.

Keep one in your gear, and coat your fingers generously with it. It works!

For What Its Worth...

I too have successfuly used the finger licking technique. While it works, I never liked having to do that, especially after shaking hands with a number of people just before going on stage.

I have also tried gorilla snot and similar products and I could never tolerate the mess they leave on your fingers (and sometimes on your picks).

That's where Sticky-picks comes in. No unsanitary licking and no residue of any sort. I like the stuff! :D

Here's what I learned from Jeff Newman: You take a needle nose pliers and bend the tabs on the picks so that they maximally touch your finger. This takes some time. now, the friction between your finger and the pick is maximized and the pick feels comfortable. You can play all night without pain. You can flip your hand hard, but the pick won't come off. However, they slip off easily when you want to take them off. - Jack
