Randy Beavers- The Marty Stuart Show

Post by Kevin Hatton »

Just saw Randy Beavers on the Marty Stuart Show with Lee Ann Womack. Great playing on that light weight Zum. Sounded fantastic. Real country music is alive.

Ya, I saw it too. That was the best thing I've seen on TV in a long time. I couldn't tell what Randy was playing. Was It the Zum or something new? It almost looked like a student model but sound great.

I've loved her ever since "Here Comes Never Again , Again" and I'm so glad that Marty had the class to have/let her use her own band . Randy is from Tulsa and is awesome . Hank Singer is the best . How fortunate to play with LeeAnn and get to hear real country . I'm not sure the new kids get it .

I think it was a Jackson Steel, Key head recessed in body, but whatever he sounded great. Of course she did too, and (Empty Bottle, Broken Heart, and Your Still On My Mind) is one of my all time favorites. I have it by George Jones & Johhny Paycheck and now I guess I will have to have LeeAnn's. I have watched and listened to Randy since he was just a kid, (15) or so playing with Billy Parker from KVOO in Tulsa.

THE best part of this great episode, in my opinion, was Gary Carter's playing on Connie Smith's "Ain't Had No Lovin'". The fills, the lead in, the solo.. all immaculate. I DVR'ed it and had to play it back three or four times. Listen at the end of the steel and then Kenny's guitar solo for a twin part that even has Marty laughing. Great job. Paul Martin, if you see this, please relay to Gary that we always appreciate and pay attention to his picking.

The twin part used a 4 note A13b9 chord duped on the steel (A pedal and F knee lever. 5th fret, strings 9, 6,5,4) and guitar for effect. Very tasty and Marty smiled ear to ear just as that was executed.

I am especially pleased that no Sho-Bud pot metal knee levers were harmed during the filming of this show!

Truly a great show all around.....

That was probably Randy's Zum "Mini", a one off Zum built for Randy. It has been discussed here before. The way I understand it, it is a Stage One with a Zum Hybrid changer and undercarriage designed to make it all work. Then sprinkled with the Zum Magic. Randy has spoken very highly of it.

I have noticed that engineers are getting a good mix on Gary. Some of the earlier shows had Gary way in the background. Anybody have an idea which amp Gary is using? Fender I bet unless they are hiding a Peavey back there somewhere.

It looked like a steel king to me and sounded like one, lots of highs and no mids or body, not what I am use to hearing from Gary. That is why I got rid of the one I had.

Was Randy using a Fox amp? Boy was he up in the mix, loved it.

Yes the guitar is the little Hybrid Zum, "pee-wee".

Amp is a Fender Blues Jr.

The lady sure can sing. It never gets old!

Randy, right! The lady can sing and it's gotta be a blast playing for her and the pee wee souned great. I'm sure your back loves it too.

Larry, I met Gary 2 years ago and he told me that Marty liked the West Coast sound and that's why he sounds like that.
