Live Strings - wow

Post by Jamie Lennon »

Recieved my new live strings, changed them a couple of days before a show. And wow they sound awesome.

I will say they are the best strings that I have ver used, tone wise.

I glad I have finally found a string I will stick with and enjoy using.

like many folks, i figured strings were strings - but these are the "snappiest" wound strings i've ever heard - i guess thats why the name is "Live Steel".
the first time i hit the low B, i was like - yeah, thats what i'm talking about.

plus, Sid is a great guy / player (actually, he doesnt even qualify as a "player" - he's on a level so beyond that term) - and knows a thing or two about killer tone - those Live Steel strings on his old Emmons P/P - you talk about a CLEAR, STRONG tone!

i believe he mentioned he is just going to do direct sales through the website, which makes sense, as he can keep the stock fresh.

Now really without the sales pitch, what is difference about these strings? Who makes them and do they make any other brands? In my experience the only difference I've seen is either nickel or stainless. The nickel outlast the stainless but the stainless have a brighter sound. So it comes down to price and string sizes for me. Anymore I just order the standard sets and it's fine. Can you really tell the difference if it were somebody else playing them and you didn't know?

It's a pity that we can't get them here in the UK. the postage from the USA to the UK is high and this makes the cost of the strings out of reach for a lot of the players, maybe Sid could appoint a dealer here in the UK to sell them ,I'm sure it would cost effective.

Just wanted to say I love these strings. I put a set on mine 2 months ago and they sound as good as the day I put them on. Very little tuning required between playing times and tone out of this world. I'm so glad I met Sid Hutson at a steel guitar jam in Clayton, NC and at Kanapolis, NC. A great string and a wonderful person to deal with. Sid Thanks for the effort you have put into developing a really great string for the steel guitar. Will have another order in soon!!

Frank,

"The nickel outlast the stainless but the stainless have a brighter sound. "

Interesting! My experience has been different. Although stainless are brighter, which I like, they last much longer for me than nickel. The wound strings in the nickel sets lose their tone, and go "dull-sounding" much, much quicker on my Kline. I was able to go 4 to 5 weeks with the stainless, and maybe 2 weeks with nickel, and 2 weeks was stretching it. That's when I was gigging 5/6 nights a week, 5 hours a night,,, plus studio, and picnics/parties/weddings.

I was trying to convince Mike Zaite, Dr Z, to build a steel amp. I told him I liked my guitar to sound clear and bright, like a brand new grand piano. Wish he's make a steel amp! It would be killer! But he just doesn't see a big enough market.

Sid,
When I was doing that brutal schedule, I was using SIT strings. They're about 20 minutes away, so if I was in a jam, I could just walk into their office. They also make my custom gauge baritone guitar set. They're good strings. Worked well on my U-12. Always open to try new strings, and will try yours some day soon.
Best,
JB

Sid I just ordered sets for my '76 P/P D10 in stainless.
Jordan handled the call and was very knowledgeable about what I was asking. I'm looking forward to putting them on as soon as they arrive.

Interesting. At more than twice the price of "regular" strings, I look foward to trying them...

Twice the price is certainly not a deciding/detracting factor to me! I use Thomastik Infeld strings on my 6 string guitars. They're more than twice the price of cheapo strings, sound much better, and last four times as long! As far as cost goes,,, I'm ahead of the game by buying better strings.

Hey, on my electrc arch tops I like Pyramid flats and they're about $24 a set. I'll pay all the money for high quality strings....they just gotta be worth it. We'll see...There's a lot of "hype" in the string business.
