Hank Garland, All The Things You Are

Post by Roger Shackelton »

(Two Quotes From YouTube)

One of the best jazz guitarists ever. Of course was a first call Nashville studio player, played on many, Elvis, Jim Reeves, Patsy Cline, othe country recordings. Influenced many players including George Benson. His tragic car accident left him mentally impaired not long after this album, ironic picture. I bought this LP and wore it out. RIP HG.

Listen to his lyricism! Unlike today's trend of playing a bunch of random, unconnected scale notes really fast. You have to actually be a musician to play like this.

He was my favorite as well, and "Jazz Winds" was a watershed IMO. 8) :D

Roger, I really dig Hank G and have had this LP for a long time, but there's no need to take a shot at today's players. Music is at an incredibly high level today with lots of lyrical players--the music is different, that's all. I guarantee Hank would have dug what some of these players are doing.

The movie came and went without much notice.

You can buy it here for around $8:

Hank is truly one of the historically critical modern guitarists, in my opinion - jazz, pop, country, or whatever. Jazz Winds is just phenomenal without the usual, "Hey, not bad for a country player." It's just great jazz guitar, period.

I realize these quotes were from youtube, but I agree with Mike. Of course, everybody is entitled to their own tastes, but there are some great young guitar players and other musicians - that broad brush doesn't fit.

There was a copy of the movie "Crazy" on youtube (in several parts) for some time, appears to be gone now. It was OK and obviously well-intended, but for me too much focus on the soap and side-story (I assume to try to sell it to a mainstream audience), not enough on his character and music. Doesn't look like it ever got major theatrical distribution, I guess that strategy didn't work. I'd love to see, let's say, a full- or semi-documentary about Hank that really explored his contributions more deeply.

I bought the album on iTunes about a year ago and it's on my iPod player.

I almost bought a Byrdland Gibson guitar in the 60's, but the neck didn't "fit" me.

The moview was on NetFlix awhile back and it was OK, but too much fill and not enough true guitar picking for me.

Indeed, Dave, but after this flop, that idea will probably never get a second thought, at least not from "Hollywood." :\

This is my favorite guitar version of the song. Totally improvised.

Jack Mollette and I worked up Garlands arrangement during my first years in Nashville. Hank Garland's musicianship was brilliant.

Pat Metheny is just killin' it. One of the greatest players ever. In a whole other league from Hank.

Here are a few versions of the song, some of my favorites:

Richie Beirach does a complete reharmonization:

John Scofield's amazing take on it:

Lennie Tristano does a contrafact of ATTYA--about 2 bars in he completely moves the bar line (he was a genius at that):

Lee Konitz's Ablution is a contrafact:

found that record jazz winds at a little fm station my high bud used to dj at back in the 60s. spent a lot of time listening to it!!!

that movie was just awful. the money would have been much better spent on an in depth documentary. there is not one note of garland actually playing in the whole movie, and all that hollyweird crap is just useless filler.
