Auction Hunters TV show

Post by Mike Ihde »

These 2 guys buy storage lockers and hope to find riches. Fairly interesting show. Last night, among a bunch of other stuff, they they pull out a short case, open it up and there's a nice old Frypan. Looked to be in pretty good condition too. They're saying stuff like, "What the heck is this, looks like a guitar but weird" They also had what I think was a small Rick tube amp as well. This was a live show and they sold stuff on the spot to invited people in the audience. A guy from a Drum Store says he'll buy the pair for $1500. He said he doubts he'll ever sell it but it will look good on the wall in his store!!!!!!! Argghhh.

Hi Mike
On storage wars Barry got a locker with a Gibson BR9 a National metal body from the 30's both with cases and a small tube amp. I would like to see the one they show in the opening credits where they raise the door and there two rows of guitar cases.

Hi Ron
I thought Brad was high on the BR9 and low on the National and the amp.

That's right, Dennis, I was semi recalling the latter half made up for the BR-9 over-price, but the best part was 'thinking' I was smarter than Brad! They probably went higher so Barry didn't look chumped. I dig of these finder shows, they really pull some surprises on you. Cajun Pawn had a '53 recording by Jerry Lee Lewis, his 1st ever, a truly unique item in that if the record broke it's gone. They even played a portion, probably all we'll ever hear.

Just watched the $1,500 well used BR-9 episode again right after my last post, and the National looked too new, brand new, so 4-5K was unrealistic. The old off-brand amp tho, appraised at $200, was probably the score.

I'm thinking pickers Frank and Mike are in gravy from the show alone, and all else is on top of that, so they can afford to cruise, but you wouldn't know it by their tight waddiness on some buys. Frank all too often buys blind and gets burned. I really like that show and am surprised I havn't seen the steel episode.

The Vegas pawn show had a nice frypan come in, and the expert said they tuned to standard, then he played it...

Yes, Frank overpaid on two cars and lost a few thousand dollars. He'll have to sell a lot of oil cans to make up for it. 8)

Hi
The american pickers has to be for the tv. They must be getting better deals off camera.
I bought and sold rock and ever other kind of music on records plus posters, mags etc. for over 20 years on the road doing record shows and you have to make a better profet than these guy's do.
Doug, I though he over paid for the lap steel and they have bought a couple of other guitars that looked trashed.
I like the new one, Tx storage wars although I don't remember anything musical. I like the buyer Moe he has some cool cars like Berry on the other show.

Yes, I was thinking the same thing. Moe and Barry are a lot alike. They both have money and don't mind spending it, and they're both kinda weird!

The Texas storage wars is a poor man's version of the original and seems more like Lizard Lick Towing, iow more bull.... than burger. Moe is a definite Barry spinoff, but without the interesting/cool factor. Barry probably wouldn't even get in one of Moe's cars! Near mint BR-9's on ebay are going for less than 1/3 the appraisal of the beat Barry example. They blew that one rather large.

Hi Ron
I got a near mint Br9 off the forum last year with replaced tuners, case and the old tuners missing the buttons for $275. shipped. Great little lap steel.

Man, that's a great deal, Dennis, good ol' forum score!
Gibson sure had style in their favor, the 9er's a cutie, and most of their steels sounded excellant.
Plus, the matching BR-9 amp is a winner as well, did you get that too?

Gibson made 15,000 BR-9s! A lot of them are still out there and show up on eBay and at vintage dealers often.

Hi Ron-Doug
No amp just the guitar. I think I'm going to try of the new Fender Excelsior in a few weeks when they come out. I'll do the old buy one at guitar center and take it back if I don't like it. I'm also interested in the Bose L7(not sure that the correct number). Anybody ever play through one?

Doug do you know what the wood is? I was suprised at how light they are, 4lbs 7.3oz.

I don't know what kind of wood Gibson used for the BR-9. It could be ash or korina.

The 9's are pretty light for those kind of woods, but after 60 years of drying...

Dennis, the L7 seems to be car audio amplification, is that what you mean?

Sorry Ron, it's the L1 model one single bass $1999.00. It's the middle model. You can go a $1000.00 up or down on the three models.

Would like to hear from anyone who has played through one of these.
