San Antonio Steel Guitar and Western Swing Jam Session

Post by Joe Rouse »

Once again we will be having our first jam session Feb. 19, 2012 at the American Legion Hall in Converse Texas. Address is 326 Legion Dr. W. Converse, Texas. The American Legion will have all your favorite beverages at the lounge area along with a meal available for a nominal fee for both beverages and meal. Popcorn and other snacks will be available too.
This month we are happy to have our friend Dale Thomas with us. Dale is a great talented psg player, singer, and all together performer. I met Dale at the Dallas TSGA meeting about 5-6 years ago, heard him play, bought 2 of his cds and have about worn them out. Come out and see Dale and enjoy his music.
Once again the jam session is open to all steel guitar players, no matter what level of player you are. We also encourage western swing singers, musicians, and fans to join us. Please remember this is a jam where we are mostly amateurs and some very good players that we are very happy join us.
Hours are 2 pm until 5 pm and later if we need more time. Players need to be set up and ready to play at 2 pm on the dot. Admission is free but we do ask for a small donation to help pay the rent on the hall. Bring your friends and family and enjoy the fun.
One last item, if you have any guitars, amplifiers, cds, or anything related bring them with you and place a price on your items and look for a buyer. Do not bring anything that smells, grows, eats, or illegal.

San Antonio Steel Guitar and Western Swing Jam Session

Post by Joe Rouse »

We had a great jam session on Sunday. A good turnout and plenty of good western music. We had Dave (Commander) Goodman, Owen Barnes, David Jones, Dale Thomas, Bill Menges, Mark Mosely, Reggie Amos, and Roger Edgington playing steel. Owen Barnes and Dave Goodman each sang a song, and did a great job.
Our band was Brian Folks on drums, Kenneth Piper on fiddle, bass, guitar and vocals, Nancy Kozur on fiddle, Sonny Jenkins on bass, also filling in on bass was Roger Edgington. Many "Thank Yous" to you all who participated.
Converse American Legion was great and we "THANK" them for their hospitality, participation in setting the hall up and putting everything back. The bratdogs were well prepared and very tasty. Terry Smith and the members are very helpful. I would encourage anyone needing a hall for a meeting, birthday, reception etc to contact Terry at 210-658-1111.
Dale Thomas gave us a great show at the end of the jam session. He has been a favorite of mine since I met him at Dallas 5-6 years ago. A great player. Dales final song was him and Roger sending us all into smiles and goosebumps. We had several head counts of attendees and one was 46 not counting the players another was over 60. Our next jam session will be March 4, 2012 at the American Legion in Converse, Texas. Come join the fun...anyone left out who participated in the jam session please forgive me. Please let me know and I'll make a correction in my next post. Let's all remember our good friends Jody Sanders and Herb Steiner in our prayers...Joe Rouse

It appears Joe credited everyone in his post above, so thankfully no one has gone un-named. Please contact me if anyone would like photos from the Jam.

Joe, thanks so very much for your efforts to make these jams so successful! I truly enjoy myself when able to attend these and really look forward to participating and gaining "valuable" knowledge and experience especially by observing other steelers. Life is Good (especially for steelers)! :D

Hey Owen and Mark,
These jam sessions would not be successful without the participants. You both are at most of the jams and are ready to play and are good to the ear. Owen has got to be one of my favorite singers and Mark goes from his non-pedal steel to play rhythm without missing a beat...Thank you both for your remarks and remember our next jam session will be March 4, 2012 same place same time. The manager of the American Legion said Sunday we could play until we got tired...He enjoyed it too.
