Post by Larry Behm »

Stay tuned here for more info on another great steel jam at the M&M in Gresham Or in Oct. We had 21 or so at the May jam in Canby this one should be as big or bigger.

Hopefully, I'll not get caught in an Out of Town gig at work. Typically I'm delivering a trac hoe or something to jobs out of state on some weekends after doing playing gigs Fri's and Sat's. Sunday's a good time to get their illegal loads hauled by their Resident Criminal.. Me. Image

I'll be forwarding chords to things like Way to Survive, Deep Water, Remington Ride, Steel Guitar Rag, and whatever other suggestions people make to the Backup Band. If it's Kindling, I'm sure Mr Galliaso will pass them around, and I know he can play all of them. It's only fair to let them know beforehand. Bob sent me MSWord .docs for my gigs with them. I've got Bob G. and Robin S's email.

Is there some estimate of the cost of this by the M/M people? Maybe they can pay a decent wage to the band if it fills their club up with paying customers on an otherwise dead Sunday, or we can help if they can't see their way to.

Hopefully it'll be like the "Olde Days" as Ray says. I think my favorite one was there playing Rudy's Dekley in my cutoffs one year when I lived in my car.

Where has 20 years gone?

Looking forward to it.

The wife and I will be flying into Portland and arrive about 1:15 in the afternoon. Things may be too hectic for us to attend the jam, but just in case, what are the hours and how would we get there from the area of the Vetrans' hospital?

Players are coming out of the wood work to come to the big jam. If you would like to see about 650+ years of steel, be there. I plan to play both of my licks.

Sure do miss all you guys out there in the far NW. Really enjoyed meeting all of you and wish you the best with your 10/22 session. Wish I was there to really celebrate my birthday on that day. Tell Ray to play "The One Rose" for me. Best to all.

PS: Chalker's b'day is the same also and that really makes it a day to celebrate. Toss a few for him from me. Thanks.

Okay ! I got it ! Now what time does
this all start ?
Edit -- I just found the time
listed under music !
" steel jam at the M&M in Gresham Or from 1-5. "

You say
" I plan to play both of my licks. "
So ! between us that
will make a total of three !
Sounds like fun !!

Tell us Larry.........Is it going to be a circle thingie.......or what do you have in mind? Is everyone going to sit up on stage?
Is it one of those "I can play faster than you? or, is it a show case kinda thing?
Is it going to be subdued sound or are they going to hand out ear plugs at the door?

Some of us just don't know what to expect.

Hi Ray,
I've been to a few of these things, but not at The M&M before.
My guess is it will be a "set up in a circle around the dance floor" thing, with the backup band on stage (I'm not sure who that will be).
It's a totally "no competition between players" atmosphere, with players of all levels just taking their best shot at it when their turn comes around.
"Not knowing the song" or "never even heard it before" probably happens to everyone once in a while, so mistakes can happen to anybody... a friendly "Don't laugh 'cuz you might be next Image" type of thing.
Plenty of lick swappin' and gear talk, and typically a good time is had by all!
I hope you will come out and join the group.
I expect there will be too many steelers to all set up and play at once, so plenty of time to play a few, then sit out and talk with folks for a few, or "run up to play on the ones you know well, sit out for the ones you don't" type of thing.
FWIW, I will be bringing my earplugs for the rounds when everybody plays at once Image!

THANKS Pete!

Talked to a great steeler from Salem just the other day.......encouraging him to come to the M&M event next Sunday. He was turned off by the last one, due to the overwhelming VOUME he wouldn't come again, if he was paid.

Of course, that's just one person's interpretation. Got a friend from up in the Seattle area that is coming down and another "local" that's looking forward to a visit.

How many folks came to that very first one that Larry had at the Gateway Elks....way back when...before the 1980's I think it was.

FWIW, I heard I was way too loud at the last one. I was playing another steelers rig (Thanks, Tucker!), with the amp off to my left a bit... It sounded just right where I was, but I guess folks were running for cover in the area straight across from the amp ( ImageShorry 'bout that! Image).
I guess all I can do now is take another shot at it! I'll probably be too late, and ther'll probably be too many guys already set up, so maybe yall'r off the hook! Image

The Spinning Wheel has the worst accoustics of any club around, that said, this is live music not exactly your radio volume.

With the round robin everyone gets a chance to play, the showcases take up to much of the 3-4 hours we have, no one want to pack their gear to play on just a couple of songs.
