This guy is hired!
When I approach drummers with my arm extended with a set of brushes in hand it's like I'm about to get in a fist fight (I actually keep a set of those telescoping brushes in my pak-a-seat for volume control at random jams and rehearsals I end up at ) .
Cool Vid of band starts at around 20 sec: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NWjGtEmQ5Co&NR=1
I've known this song for so long, but I never noticed that the drummer used brushes. Sounds very good, if you listen closely. I think the drummer on the record was Eddie Hoh.
Fender Kingman, Sierra Crown D-10, Evans Amplifier, Soup Cube.
If I were a drummer, I'd take exception to someone handing me a set of brushes. I'm not surprised by the fist fight reaction you cite. Be like someone handing me their choice of steel bar, picks, amp, steel guitar or other gear.
Either they can play what fits the music or they can't. With all due respect Pete, your gesture would seem to suggest to a drummer that he doesn't know how to play.

They usually don't know how to play "quietly" with sticks.
Seriously though, I always first ask if they would mind trying Brushes as a means of helping to control the bands volume, to which they reply, no I don't mind, but I don't have any brushes.
There are alot of versions of that tune, with various members over the years.
You agree that is him in this vid, though. Right?
He actually does look like Brian Jones.

This is fun and educational!
Who is the drummer in the video?
Who played the brushes on the recording heard here?
This is a different Steel solo than the one I remember on the album...
[edit] Last of The Red Hot Burrotos version... that rapid fire lick. .
I'm still showing this vid to all my Drummer friends (and foe's )!
"Please play more like... Jon Corneal???"

Yes you're right Pete. But since Michael Clarke was an original member of the Byrds he is legendary for me.
I have the J.J. Walker record "Cow Jazz" on which he plays, and he actually plays brushes on a few tracks...
Fender Kingman, Sierra Crown D-10, Evans Amplifier, Soup Cube.
Isn't it brushes that kicks off Ricky Skaggs "One Way Rider" off of the "Highway & Heartaches" album..? I always liked the drums syncopated rhythmic chop on that track.
For sure it's Clarke lip syncing to Eddie Hoh's drummimg from the Lp. Eddie used to play with the Mammas and Papas. He also played on the Supersession album with Kooper, Bloomfield and Stills.
My favorite drummers around here are the ones that aren't afraid to use brushes (and as a bonus leave the toms at home! ), and don't need to be asked. Very few that do that, though, and they are usually working.

Yes I think metal brushes. I don't know if those (pictured above) exsisted back in the 60s/70s. I found even those can still be too loud (IMHO) for certain situations, at least to my poor tired ears.
