So it's YOU that has to do the slant, so I say, however you can do it without adding more bar dings to your finish or fretboard, go for it $:\$

I know the position I'm trying to get to, it's just the getting there more easily that I was concerned with. I'll try with the shorter bar.

IE ... JB' s left index finger

His proximal and intermediate phalanges could remain parallel to the bar ... while his distal phalanx made almost a 90 degree angle to the bar ... at the distal interphalangeal joint ...

A very atypical ability ... probably joint hypermobility syndrome ... according to a hand surgeon friend of my wife's at UM Medical School ... a musician who I showed my video collection of JB to.

JB still moved his index slightly toward the middle right of the bar during a reverse slant, while he continued pressure with his arched , right angled finger ...

... At least in all the videos I have of him.

He explained in a talk tape to me once .... that sometimes his instruction and his live playing differed ... The latter being much more advanced ... And he encouraged his students to learn the basics and then develop ...

Anyway ... As far as the bar ... A 2 3/4" x 3/4 " is the weapon of choice for me. I can tell the difference between the 2 3/4" and a 2 7/8" while executing a reverse slant ... That extra 1/8" throws me off ... And I have large hands

Rick.........THANKS for sharing with the SGF. No where in the world, could ANYONE find better or more clearly demonstrated examples of FORWARD or REVERSE SLANTS.

As shown, slants on the steel guitar are an ESSENTIAL to playing the instrument. So much music is there to be had, BETWEEN THE FRET MARKERS and this can only be realized by the technique of SLANTING the BAR as you play. Slants like vibrato, is an always and forever kinda thing, not just to be used on a special occasion.

By the way, did any of you notice the other 'casual' embellishments that JERRY used? That rapid quiver of the bar, creating a 'yodel' type of sound like many vocalist use.....is a standard to most singers.

Huh, I've never heard Lorene or anyone else mention doing this for practice, and it's something I did a lot just to get it mentally automatic. Cool.

Ron, at the beginning of the video she recommends (in her words)

"Before you get started with the bar on the strings, do a little exercise to get your control, do it on your knee, do this while your watching television, and do it while you're having a conversation. Once you feel really secure with doing it this way, you'll be ready to try the hazards of playing it on the strings"

At the very beginning of the video, laying down the modus operandi as she sees it !!!

I found it's better to do it on a solid surface to keep it steadier and easier to focus on the minutiae.

Therein he has posted Marty Robbins "The DRIFTER" videos and while viewing the Solo's and back-up by JERRY BYRD, there comes several over-head shots of Jerrys' slanting in progress.
