I need help with my DVD burners.

I've tried everything that has been told to me and still whenever I put a blank DVD or CD in either one of them, it will cause the computer to reboot. If I leave the disc in, the computer will continue to reboot. It doesn't make any difference if it is a CD or a DVD. If the disc has data on it or music, they will both read the disc and play it. I have uninstalled the drivers and re-installed them. The latest thing I tried was to purchase a new LG burner and install it. It has made no difference. So I now have an HP and an LG. At one time I could burn DVD's and CD's with no problem. I just can't figure out what changed. Could my virus protection be doing something or what could possibly be causing it to reboot on a blank disc but not one that has data? I appreciate any input you might have.

First, the drivers - the only drivers are the built in Windows drivers.

What is the PC and what Operating System? Also what type of interface is on the drives? PATA (IDE) or SATA? If it's PATA, make sure both drives, "device type" is set to Cable Select (will be marked CS or CSEL on the drive). If it's SATA there are no jumpers needed.

Go to the Device Manager and look at the status of the drives. Is there any error code? if there is, post back with the error code.

Remotely there could be some malware/spyware causing the problem. It's far fetched but possible. Run a malware/spyware scan with the free (and highly recommended) MalwareBytes program. Also run an antivirus scan.

This is a start in trying to correct the problem.

My computer has an AMD Athlon 2.20 Ghz 3200X processor.I use Windows XP ver. 2002 with service pack 3. I have 1 gig of ram. Both drivers show normal in the device drives section. The burners are hooked to the motherboard with an IDE cable. The jumpers on the back of them are set to master and slave. I am using AVG virus protection with the latest updates. I will be checking for malware to see if that is an issue. Thanks for trying to help me with this.

Master/Slave is OK but most vendors quit using that back in the Windows 98/ME days. But, I don't think that is the problem.

I ran the free malware program and it found some small things but I don't think that is the issue either. I'm going to try a blank disc after posting this note, but I feel that the problem is still there.

Next step would be to "uninstall" the drives in the Device Manager.

Go to the Device Manager, RIGHT click on the entry for one of the drives to highlight it and then LEFT click "Uninstall". Do the same for the other drive. Then restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the drives. This fixes any status corruption between the drives and Windows and fixes a lot of flakey problems.

I've already done that twice with no change, but I'll give it another try since I installed another burner to see if that would help. I also tested the burners after running the malware software with no change.

OK. I just uninstalled the drives and rebooted the computer. I can now at least get them both to accept a blank cd. I put data and music on one and it accepted it. I then tried to copy those files to the other one and got a hardware error. I then copied a data file and a music file to the second drive and it did accept that info directly. ??? Should I take the jumpers off that make them a slave and master?

Try the Cable Select jumper option on both drives. As the device type locations for the jumpers are not always in the same location you will have to physically look at each drive to find out which slot is Cable Select. As I previously noted it can be labeled CS or CSEL on the drives.

What program are you using to CD/DVD burning?

Our Bass player, Bernie Waldon is in Indianapolis for a family reunion. Bernie lived there until he retired but still owns a house there.

For the music, I used Windows media player. For the data I just used a copy from a Word document. I now have a DVD in both of them and it has not rejected them or tried to reboot the computer. I'll look to see if I can use the cable select jumper. Thanks

I downloaded the software and a whole bunch of other stuff came with it. I will probably delete most of the other stuff. I guess the infra software is all I need.

Also I tried the cable select on the two burners and that didn't work, as it caused the system to reboot. Should I have used cable select on only the slave? I went back to master slave jumpers and the master appears to be working fine but the slave doesn't recognize when there is a DVD in it. Very puzzling????

Cable select needs to be on both. Could have been one was not set to Cable Select.

But, if it works OK with Master/Slave leave it there.

Since the drive does not recognize the DVD, what type of DVD do you have? DVD-R, DVD+R or a DVD RW type? Most new/newer drives will accept both types, but some older drives will only work with -R or +R discs.

I have an HP 840 as a the slave and an LG gh22 as the master. The drivers both show installed but the HP just acts like that there is no disc in it. They are both compatible with most all of the current formats.

OK. Here's where I am. I've got the LG as master and it appears to be working without causing the computer to reboot. I've reinstalled the driver for the HP and it shows that it has been installed. However, when I put a disc in it, it doesn't recognize the disc. It's as if there isn't one in it. In other words the computer says there is a drive there but there is nothing in it.

They don't work, then the do work or work partially and then don't work again. This leads me to a hardware problem or a bad IDE Ribbion I/O cable (and maybe even a flakey CD/DVD drive).

If you don't have a spare IDE Ribbon I/O cable, get another and try that. A computer repair or maybe even Best Buy, or one of the Office Supply stores should have one. They are relatively cheap.

Also, try the Master only, without the slave connected and see if it works OK. Do the same with the other drive (it will have to be set to master).

The master only works. It even works now with the slave attached and jumpered properly. I haven't tried just the slave alone in the master postion. I'm beginning to think I have an IDE cable that is bad. It is marked master and slave right on it and I know that it is attached according to the markings. I actually have three drives and have inner changed them. I think that they all work ok. I stopped to have supper and began to think about the bad cable. I have another cable but it isn't marked for master/slave however it does have a place for two connections. Will it work and if so, do I need to do anything special to hook it up? Thanks again.

IDE cables are "standard". If you have another try it. Connect the end connection to the "master" and the middle connector to the "slave" - and obviously the other end to the motherboard.

It sounds like the HP drive has become misaligned, so that the laser is no longer reading DVD disks. try replacing it with another LG drive, that does both CD and DVD recording.

Get a new dual UDMA IDE cable while you're at it. If the new LG drives can transfer at higher data rates, the 80 wire cable is needed to get the most out of them.

I have two HP drives. I've tried them both. Not only that, the LG will accept a blank cd or dvd but when I tried to burn something to it. it rebooted my computer. Is there a software product that I can purchase as a diagnostic to try and chase this problem down? I changed the ide cable, I've tried a variety things with little or no success. All three drives are light scribe but I don't use that function as I am just using regular cd's or dvd's. Could that have something to do with it? Can I turn the light scribe function off to see if that helps?

OK guys. I have done as much in the way of diagnostics as I know how with no problems. I did a disc chk and also ran my virus checker which is on all the time anyway, but just reran the scan. I cleaned up all of the junk files. I finally disconnected the slave (HP) and uninstalled it. I then put a disc in the new LG with data on it and it rebooted the computer.??? Where do I go from here?

I thought we were on the way to solving the problems. I've got to think now that there is a problem with the IDE controller on the motherboard.

If you have any motherboard chipset drivers, reinstall them as a last shot.
