Martina McBride

Post by Lee Gillespie »

Am listening to her latest CD "Timeless" as I post this. (about the 4th time). What a pleasure to hear the songs that to me made country music what IT WAS..Paul Franklin captured the feel the the era with his impecable playing. This is the first country CD I've purchased in many moons. Thank you Martina for maybe bringing country music back from the brink>>>....Lee

I agree. Great songs, and great singing. But, I think the tone on the steel sucked. Too dry for me. I was disappointed about that part. If she wanted to do a "real" country CD, and capture the "real" country sound, she should have gone to Texas and got Dicky, Bobby, Justin, etc... Amber Digby's two recent CD's successfully captured the sound that the Nashville guys were trying to get. My opinion.

Rick: I agree with with you with the sound. Who ever mixed it missed record mixing 101. But taking in mind, the recording scene in Nashville has put out a lot of bad stuff in the past years, and not letting the artist record what I consider good country music., It took someone with a lot of guts to let her record the "Timeless album.

Timeless was recorded with the equipment that was available at the time of the original sessions. From what I have read on this, the engineers aquired some old vintarge mikes, and other recording equipment and used it to get the sound. Paul mentioned setting the tone to sound like the era. I love it, as Lee said, this is the first cd that I've purchased in a long time.

I'll take and support all the real country that comes out these days, including Martina's. She needs to be encouraged to do more, not picked at for "not good enough" effort. She put a lot of heart and soul into this project, and it's definately a step in the right direction. Martina, I hope you do many follow-up albums!

My wife and I thought Timeless was so good, we bought three more and gave them away as Christmas presents. My buddy Fred, still has it on his player in the car and listens all the time.

I think we all agree on one thing. New York money has taken GOOD COUNTRY MUSIC down the road of dispair. Admittingly people like Allan Jackson, Ricky Scaggs, George Jones, George Strait and a few others have remain purest to their art. Somehow we need to let them yahoo producers who think they know what country fans want.... to get out of town...My opinion. Lee

I think the way it works is that the general record buying concert going public don't really have a preference for music. They like what they hear on the radio because.."if it's on the radio, then everybody else must like it, and if I want to be with the in crowd, then I'll like it too." Those of us that are lovers of real traditional country are in the minority. Our voice is not loud enough to make a difference to the $$$ producers.

Consider this: When an entertainer is on top with some chart records, etc.... they have a good country band with fiddle and steel....but when they start to cool off, these are the first two things to go. This should tell us something.

I don't think there is anything we can do about it.

So do you like Martina's "Timeless" or not?
I must say, I'm shocked by the comments here.

Hi Teresa.. If you have any doubts weather we like Martina's Timeless. Start at the top and read again. Yes from what I read... we all like her record to various degrees. I personally hope she follows up with another in the same vain.. and maybe there will be other artist who will jump on the band wagon. Then maybe the great unemployed country song writers will be asked to write great tunes again. Lee

I think Timeless was/is great! Martina took a stand and did what she wanted. She produced it and did a great job! I honestly didn't think she had it in her before I heard it, but she proved me wrong.

There will always be disagreements on all aspects of music. The only opinion that matters is our own. We either like it or not and we will either listen or not. Everything we as individuals like, then someone else don't like it and that works both ways.

So it ends up being a non-issue...because we still listen to what we like. Who cares what anyone else thinks!

I really enjoy the CD and there is also an accompaning DVD that is fun to watch.

It details how the CD was made, the choice of songs, etc.

It has some good shots of Paul Franklin also.

I personally think the album is surburb. I especially like the in "your face steel" that isn't all muddied up and buried in the mix by todays technolgy. I have had this CD for almost a year now and think Paul's playing is surburb as well as tasteful. The lap steel on the old Hank songs are also an added treat. If I'm correct the sells on this CD were Martina's best ever. I hope this was just the beginning of more projects like this to come.

I think if we took the other dozen "Timeless" threads (or whatever the number is) that have come out since it was released at the end of last summer or early fall, and combined them together, the overall votes of approval would far outnumber the those that don't care for it.

This album has inspired more topics on the Forum in the past year than Robert Randolph and Jerry Garcia! Image

Theresa, I think it's a great CD. To me, Martina sounded fantastic, and of course Paul played with absolute perfection as well. "Timeless" has been one of the very few new releases I've bought in a while as well.

Theresa,

My CD habit used to be out of control when there was country music to be had.

I only bought 3 or 4 albums last year and "Timeless" was one of them. It is an excellent CD, and the companion video was also nice. Any musician or vocalist that would diss this album for any reason is either flat out jealous or has some serious hearing issues. All musicians and singers involved were at there very best.

Pauls playing on that album was superb.

Is this the Martina album that has "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" on it? Man, what a set of pipes this gal has! I think there are a few more standards on it. I wasn't a MMcB fan until now. Has anyone checked out Lori Morgan's "Secret Love" album where she sings the standards? Nice. No steel, but nice music.

No, this is the album where she chose a bunch of classic country songs, "You Win Again," "Help Me Make It Through The Night," "You Ain't Woman Enough To Take My Man," etc.

John Drury, there is no lack of good country music out there-just not on the mainstream country stations. Made by folks that often don't have marquee names, and on smaller labels.
