Forget Nashville,,,Texas is where the REAL country music is. I don't resent the music in Nashville,,I just resent them "calling" it country. Nashville would call the sounds of a sick jackass in a hailstorm country if it would make'em a buck,,,,it's tradition,,goes back to the old National Life and Accident, and WSM days,,,when they'd bring some VERY talented hillbilly in and "let him be on the radio" (free talent so they could sell advertising,,,nothing has changed.

Well, compared to the real stuff,"new country" is paraplegically lame-because it's "rock"-but it's sooo much better than all the other "rock" subgenres that we can confidently say even an occasional use of a country influence classes up a tune enormously.Whether such added good taste makes a piece palatable depends,of course,on the listener.

Bob Simons I would be offended by the tone of your post, but I've become a kinder and gentler guy since I got the new Harley... ;- )

Go listen to some Merle Haggard, the songwriting, the tune smithing, the picking and the singing. Now please tell me ONE group or person of the new garbage that can hold a candle to it. I'll be waiting back by the pool table cause I'm up next...

For instance:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eM213aMKTHg

Sorry, ya have to listen to a 30-second advert for this one cause it's new COMMERCIAL INC. Country. How many times do they sing the chorus? Is there anything a reasonably cool guitar picker could not play? Hear the steel? oops! No steel.

Okay.. same story, different guy:

http://youtu.be/yNTWW1y1x0M

That is some terrific song writng, much more sophisticated, more powerful, deeper, real. Merle relates more in a few words, a line than all the wah-wah poor me, I'm drunk and I'm ugly and my boyfriend won't call me junk...

Bob, I don't eat at McDonalds. I don't drive a Prius. I'm selective about what I let into my life. and I sure as heck am not gonna let some fake, phony digitally enhanced baloney into my ears. You do as you please... ;- )

Well sometimes fighting is part of life, either with your boss, your spouse or "the law..." At least Merle's stuff is real, unlike the namby-pamby cry baby stuff I posted by Lady Antiblowhard...

Sure, Merle Haggard wrote a few great timeless songs..(particularly sentimental if you are a crude, bigoted redneck.) So did Willie, so did Roy Acuff for that matter. So what? THey are buried among tens of thousands of boring redundant tunes with the same melody, chord progressions, and cheesy sentiments.

It is the old music of old, narrow-minded people in your language not today's language. It is no more presently relevant than Frank Sinatra or Bing Crosby although both are still enjoyable to listen to occasionally.

Country music resembles blues. It is best to me when it is the honest expression of a folk culture. In the world of music business that is not always the case. THat is the only point on which we agree.

Unless you have a sentimental attachment to these tunes or you are listening to the few great songs (and there are few in any genre), take my word for it, this stuff is boring to everybody else.

Bob, I have two Harleys, come on out to Sacramento, we'll ride the Sierras and I'll tell you why you are full of beans calling Merle bigot. And he wrote so many, many killer songs, you need to get out more. As for Blues, on I was the only white boy in a number of bands over in Oakland back around 1968...

Got to get on the FatBoy and get back to work, lunchtime is over...

 Folks when do you think ''REAL CLASSIC COUNTRY MUSIC '' will make a complete circle again ? Just think when it does we won't have to complain about whats being played now !!! They say what goes round comes round ! I don't know who penned that but it sounds good to me ! Include most of us in the ''old fogies '' and out of touch category if you want to ,we still have our opinions the same as the rest . Lets respect our fellow forum members and let them express their opinions also ! This is what makes us who we are and if we were all the same then what would we have to talk about ? Spread the love !

Nicely stated!

I've been keeping out of the "real" country threads cause I don't have anything constructive to add, but for the Mele lovers here's a particularly stinky tune of his I remember from my childhood

I will be the first to say that there are lots of songs on a recording project that wont make the top ten list . I won't like every song on any recording but i will like several of them . How bout Ray Stevens recordings some folks would turn their nose up to him ! Some people just don't like humor or funny songs !

Bob;

You are very welcome sir!

As far as your question about graft...I suggest that based on the sentence preceding the question...that ...It Already Has!

Ps. I use Jagwires.

George gets it. That's a great song and a great clip. Real life and real stuff, not corporate pablum. Thanks!

Here's a couple old farts singing a dead old art's song. Maybe heard it too many times which is okay, because the crap out of Nashville will never have legs. It's as disposable as a Slurpie cup...

IFCA Booth

Post by Dave A. Burley »

For those that would care to look, The IFCA's website is www.ifca-bluegrass-country.com Check it out. The pictures tell what the booth was like. Every year we had Classic Country, (Lynn Anderson, Charlie Louvin, Jeannie Kendall, Don Helms, John Hughey) and many more that appeared in the booth to meet and greet and sign autographs for the fans. We always had long lines which proved to me that the Classic Country is really quite alive. The new criteria eliminated the IFCA if the CMA wished to read it that way. We were told that we were too Hee Hawish. The young people that are running the CMA today do not like Classic Country. .........One of the criteria was that an artist must have had a top 40 hit song some time during their career. They must have also sold at least 150,000 albums.
Aaron Kelly, the young man that came in 5th on last years American Idol show was allowed to have a booth. According to the criteria, he does not qualify. He is not eligible when reading the eligibility requirements. The CMA changes their rules to suit themselves. If it was possible to file a lawsuit against the CMA for denying us a booth although we are eligible, I would do it. We are happy for Aaron as he spent 5 years in the IFCA booth before he hit it big on the Idol show. Aaron has always given the IFCA booth credit for exposing him to so many thousands of people which helped him to make the top 5 on the Idol program.

If real country music is about, being sad, crying, being locked up,real life like beating up your wife,Going down a road in a old pick up truck,drinking,fighting--You know what :?: I don't like songs that leave that kind message. I,ll go with the new crap country, the old crap depresses me.

Maybe i'll start playing Hawaiian songs again, starting with "Harbor Lights" and call it Country :P Joe
