How often do you change your copedent?

Post by b0b »

Some people stick with one copedent forever.

At the other extreme are people who change their pulls every other week.

I thought a poll would be fun.

Ah, so that would make this a pull poll.

I've found the setup I like and doubet I will change it in the near future. However since I have only played for a couple of years I've changed the guitar around several times. Experiment after check all the varied schools of thought. What a great instrument, it seems fairly limitless. Cheers from A-Town

My first chart is dated 1981.
Second chart is dated 1988.
Third chart is dated 2010.

No copedent changes in between.

I voted 3 to 10. That's allowing for adding extra pulls here and there. F.I., raise 1 & 2 whole tone, raise 7 whole tone, etc.

Not revamping the entire setup. I would consider a copedent change as moving changes from one pedal/lever device to another.

My basic D10 pedal/lever positions haven't changed for several years. Only adds like the ones mentioned previously.

I've just switched two C6th changes on my guitar - I've now decided I want to lower the As to Ab, so I took the A-B raises off my C6 vertical and put it in the more-usual place (P4), and now I lower the As to Ab on that vertical.

All this probably goes to prove that I don't know that neck as well as I should....

I don't like changing things - in this case I don't think I've got the slack right as tuning the 'raise' with the nylon-hex is actually sharpening the string's tuning!!! This'll mean a trip to Dave Robbins so he can take it all off and do it properly!

I've owned a D12, sold it, and missed the C6th. So...I changed my SD10 to a C6th. Now I'm looking to make "another change" to it, so I can get some of the E9th sounds I miss.
I've also missed the low range of the D12, so I've experimented with strings 9 & 10.
In the end, I suppose I need a Universal SD12.

The only change I made on my '77 P/P was changing the first string to raise a whole tone instead of the half tone raise it was built with. One change in 34 years; I hope I'm not overdoing it.

I had to go with the "several times a year" option.
When I was using my Fender 400 full time, I had a different set up on a couple of different songs, so it changed a few times a night. Then on a Fender cable guitar it takes almost 30 seconds to change your copedent.

When I bought my MSA Classic I had the "E's" levers on the right knee. After realizing this was non that common, I inverted the left and right levers.
Then added a vertical lever, then a PF pedal...

Lately I've bought a D10 Zum and I meant to change its levers to have on it the same copedent I was used too.
But it was set up perfectly and was playing great... so got used to it quickly and I ended up modifying the MSA again to have the same copedent of the Zum.
I bet it won't take so long before I install three pulls on pedal 4 to have a PF pedal on the Zum too...

Quite restles, I'd say... :P

I should add that my basic E9 set-up - 'Day', with three pedals and four 'knees' - hasn't changed in thirty years. Raise and lower both 'E's, lower 2 and 9, and lower both Bs to Bb. I have an extra two KLs on the E neck, but they're subject to change.

They're also subject to being totally ignored when I'm working for my living.

I experimented a lot in the beginning (didn't we all?) but have had basically the same setup now for many years. I recently added a zero pedal. and am toying with the idea of changing one of my knee levers, but have not actually done so yet.

I'm a universal player and have been forever. In 1975 Bud Carter built me an MSA I played for 5 or 6 years, then Bruce Z built my Zumsteel in 1980 with the same 7 pedal changes and 6 knee lever changes as the MSA; it had 7x7 with a G# to G lever added. My Fessenden guitar has 8x8 but those 6 or 7 pedals and 6 knee changes are identical. My push-pull has 6x6 with (you guessed it) those same 6 pedals and 6 knees. It is my minimum setup -- no Franklin pedal -- no G# to G -- no 2nd string raise to E -- but I have no problem playing gigs or sessions with it -- it is my best sounding guitar. My Show Pro is set up almost exactly the same as the Fessy with one less lever.

So, basically, the core of my setup has been the same for almost 40 years but I have added an optional pedal or lever a couple of times.

Before the ZumSteel was traded, I did experiment with an E13 universal tuning and scrapped it and went back to my old faithful setup. I only used it on a few gigs and was playing primarily the push-pull at that time. FWIW.

All this stuff is on my website if anyone is interested

Well, b0b, maybe you should have added a "I used to futz a lot but have settled down" category. I'd fit in there better than the "rarely" I checked.

I'm pretty satisfied with the setup I've had for the last few years.
Ah, so that would make this a pull poll.

If I had more than one guitar, and at least one of them very easy to work on, I would do a lot of experimenting. I would try out every idea mentioned on this forum. I keep fooling around with different amps and effects as it is.

So Roger... does this mean you no longer have the "BR" changes on pedal 4? I thought we were friends... this really hurts. :)

Fear not, Buck - we're still firm friends!

Your change is now on my RKL...

It's been there a while, and P4 has only been working on E9 (Isaacs pull - raising 5 to C# and 6 to A; I love that for gettinga 4 chord over a 5 in the bass!) I found two P4 rods, so I was able to reinstate the As to Bs on there....

I'm one of those few that changes several times a year. Always searching for something new and studying many tunings (mostly bOb's postings) to see what I can combine to make something wierd that works. Probably why I don't play any better than I do

Are we referring to changing an open string copedant or just pedal and knee lever changes to the same open string copedant ?

Thought so :)

Does buying new/old PSGs with different copedents count?

I have bought 4 the last couple of years, and they all came with some minor differences compared to each other and are all very different to the PSG I have had for 30 years and have changed copedent on twice.
