4558 op amp

What is a newer replacement for the 4558 op amps. Looked on the web and there are different designs, not sure if I should use low noise, high gain, or what?

I've had good luck with the OPA2134PA from Mouser in NV112s and NV1000s. Getting ready to try them in my NV400... Other opinions of course my vary.

Depends on the circuit. If it's the first stage in the preamp a change could make a difference. If it's in some other stage in the preamp it may not make much of a difference.

In Peavey amps, the Burr Brown OPA2604PA or OPA2134PA op amps have been used for replacement. Peavey used the OPA2604's in their Nashville 400 mod kit. Ken Fox originally was using the 2604's in his mods/updates but is now using and selling the OPA2134PA op amps.

In addition the the newer Burr-Brown chips there is the old standby 5532 if the power supply can handle it, better yet TLO72 if there are 18 volts or less at the supply rails (4558 is rated at 20 volts but not all circuits run that hot).

4558 is dual op-amp 8 pin package. It was used in a lot of music instrument circuits as an amplifier in the late 1970's. It's biggest down fall is a slow slew rate which can cause the higher frquencies to be distorted, especially in high gain, above 30dB, apps. The new chips in general will have the same pin-out and faster slew rates and lower noise. I believe the old Furman EQ preamp that Buddy Emmons used had 4558s in it so they do work. The big thing is to make sure the device pin-out are the same.
