The Grammy Awards 2011

I always enjoy watching the Grammy Awards, regardless of the fact that some of the music is off of my radar. Last night was no exception. There were some very good moments and here are my favorites:

1. Jennifer Hudson singing Respect. She was lumped with a few other singers, but she has a tremendous voice in my opinion and she paid tribute to Aretha nicely.

2. Janelle Monae's performance. After Bruno Mars did his thing, this girl rose from under the stage and just killed. I really like her.

3. Esperanza Spalding winning Best New Artist brought tears to my eyes, that how much I think of her.

4. The Carolina Chocolate Drops won Best Traditional Folk Album, even though they weren't shown in primetime.

5. I enjoyed the segment with Dylan. Say what you will, but any time Bob is involved it's an event. You could see how much the younger players from the other groups were inspired by his presence. It was contagious.

6. Barbara Streisand, although she is not the singer she once was, was a special presence last night. Evergreen is a beautiful song.

7. Nora Jones singing Jolene with Mayer and Urban. I adore Nora--she is as sweet as she is talented.

8. Roy Haynes' getting the recognition with a Lifetime Achievement award. Just an incredible drummer.

9. I also enjoyed Mick Jagger's tribute to Solomon Burke. The band was kicking and I like Mick a lot.

10. The stage show when bands like Muse played was incredible. I loved the special effects--I've never seen anything like it before.

Mike I have to agree..
Jennifer Hudson is an monster soul singer
as was the first girl in line and Martina McBride.. Xtina A was subdued but not enuff ,

I didn't get Jenelle Monae at all . or Bruno

Bruno Mars seemed to be off and a poor Jackie Wilson imitation on his solo number..

I would kill for Esperanza

I saw the Chocolate Drops on Marty Stuarts show saturday night.. very interesting.. bluegrass with soul! I liked it .

Urban and Mayer just flat played that song..
I enjoyed the show..

I thought Jagger was an inspiration to the "over-60" crowd, as well. The Dylan set was a joy to watch and the 2 bands that backed him were infectious. I also really enjoyed their individual sets. I don't care much for Lady Gaga's music, which I see as a sound track for her "outrageous imagery" and I kind of like the imagery, I also think she's a master of her "craft", in the same way that Madonna was a master of her's. What I did like was her showing a bit of humility and that was unexpected.

I only saw about 10 minutes. Part was Lady A getting song of the year. The other was Nora Jones and company doing Jolene.

Agreed. Too bad Mayer and Urban had to ruin the performance for me (of a song I really don't like to begin with). I would have been happier with just Nora singing.

I'm with you, Mike,,,excellent review...I engineered part of the new Los Lobos record that was up (and lost) in two categories, but it always feels good to be a part of it...

An instrumental entitled "Hummingbyrd" which is a tribute to Clarence White. I commented on another forum that I wonder how many people in that building on Grammy day have ever heard of Clarence White?

Never underestimate the depth of musicians' knowledge of music. Even the least likely candidates will surprise you. After all, music is their life, too, and many of them make it their business to listen to as much music as they can.
