Jason Aldeans steel player on Leno

Did anyone watch the steel player. I was watching him play and he was rocking his steel back and forth on two legs like a rocking chair. Seems to me this would harm the guitar. On top of it all, I hardly eard him all in the mix.

IS this not the stupidest thing you've ever seen? I understand trying to get into the music but gimme a break.

Who is this guy?

His name is Jay Jackson and he plays a Sho-Bud Pro I. Previously, he'd worked with Jack Ingram, and he also appeared in Loretta Lynn's "Portland, Oregon video.

He was playing a Desert Rose Friday night on Leno . . . and barefooted! Here's a link to the show - Jason's performance is in Chapter 6 at about 38:07 . . .

In todays economy a Jobs a Job..Whether he likes what he is playing he at least is playing it..Aldean has plenty of work and if this guy does not try to take over the band he should have a good run.

Just ain't no pleasin' this bunch. A post about another steel player had a comment that he didn't appear to be happy or enjoying himself. You can't say that about Jay

I'm just glad they're still using steel guitars all over the place. The music, well that's another thing....these guys don't have control over that.

Maybe we should just try to support our steel pickin' brethren in spite of everything else.

Yes indeed he is accomplished player. No doubt. Better than me of course. I'm not questioning his talent. I just dont see the need to need to have to rock a guitar around like that.

But hey that's what the crowd wants to see right? So fine, he can go ahead a pick the guitar up and smash it to the floor like regular guitar players do and he'll be liked even more. That's the mindset of today's idiocracy. By the way, if you've ever seen the movie Idiocracy, it's not to far from the truth.

I actually dont think you are sorry to offend me Ben, which is totally fine. I've certainly witnessed my share of things that made me say "That is the STUPIDEST thing I've ever seen"! But in the end you just end up sounding like a grumpy old bitter man. And the grumpy old man choir gets a bit stale after awhile.

Personally I just don't see where it's of any value to anyone on this forum to hear someones opinion that a performance was the most terrible or awfulest or the stupidest, nor is it POLITE.

I like Idiocracy very much Ben (Electrolytes!) It is scary how right on the money that movie is sometimes. I think your beef with the steel player may be linked to your views of our society, and the dumbing down of our culture. That would have made for a far more interesting post than what you chose to write.

The new face of Country is alive here, in Texas, and this is a great example. Jason has a big following here. We do several of his tunes, and they always get a great response at BillyBobs...hes on top, and theres a steel in the band...Outstanding...Barefoot, ShoBud, good Tone!...I LIKE IT

Looks like an easy gig, too. At least, he makes it look easy. More power to him. The music doesn't appeal to me much, but I doubt that musicians over 60 are part of their target demographic.

I see on this forum there seems to be alot of criticism to other players lately.

I couldn't get the clip to open.
I like Jay backing Jessica. More power to him if he can play barefoot, standing up, & rocking! The instrument is hard enough to play besides being able to play it like that and doing a fantastic job!

I'm so happy Jason records with pedal steel and thinks enough of the instrument to hire Jay! Jason is one of the top selling artist in country music today!

I hope alot of you younger players read these post and LOL!

I take your point Ben. It does seem that just playing the music is not enough anymore. People have been brainwashed to believe that if you're not "rocking out" with an attitude, you're not performing, thanks in part to the so called "reality" music shows.

This is as prevalent in today's country music as in any other style. That crowd wouldn't be satisfied to just sit and listen to a great artist delivering a great song ala Gene Watson, Don Williams, et al.

Still, I don't see anything wrong with being energetic in a performance.

He wasn't standing up though and he was wearing socks at least, and it's nice to see a steel guitar in the band and I support him completely as I stated in my earlier post. Just this geezer's opinion, FWIW.

My band Willowcreek opened for Jasion at a fair. He at that time didn't have a steel player. But his fans got to hear a steel guitar,me!

Thats me on stage before Jasion did his thing.
