How many of us use PODs?

Post by Mike Perlowin RIP »

The last time I attended a convention, I thought the player with best tone was Ron Elliot. Turns out he also uses a POD. I see more and more players using these things.

I joined the club a couple of years ago. I got one from Tommy Dodd with his mounting rack, and presets to (which I added a few settings on my own.) I find it to be extremely useful.

I just got one of those new 22 pound ZT Club amps, and use the controls on the amp flat and use the POD to get my tone.

So, who else uses one?

Hi Mike,

Ive been using the original 2.0 pod for about 7 years as a front end and it works well. I had gotten it when it first came out when I played guitar in a trio situation I was in then and then it got shelved. Pulled it out one day and started
messing around with the thing and liked it as a front end to a Webb. Although Line 6 had chip upgrades, I never got one and really dont know how much more could be got from that "Kidney" with one. Now Im looking at it as a front end for the GK line of small 2 lb. amps. Has anybody tried it with one of those?

Yeah, I've got the XT. It's not mind blowing, but for the price it's got some good stuff.

Sometimes I use one, Pod xt, it's OK. But using a few pedals is less complicated, so, usually that's what I use. I don't think Pod actually enhances tone that much, having a guitar and amp that sounds good is more important. I recently got a NV112, and really like the sound I'm getting.

Ron is using a POD XT.

I've been using one, for effects only, on live shows. I've also been using it direct to the board for recording the last couple of years.

I have a new CD "Steel Time" that b0b will be selling soon (I just sent the CD to him yesterday) and the steel was done with the POD XT. I donated the CD to the forum, so any sales go to to help support the forum.

HERE is the review on Mike Gross' swingin west web site.

Use(d) one since the 'xts came out. Manu hundreds of gigs. Love them. I was totally sold on their viability when Gary Morse came to town with Dierks and used one to power two amps on stage.

I liked the xtLive even better for a number of reasons but never foundit practical for weekend gigs.

I tried a Zoom G2Nu, and fell in love with it, it's ease of use, and very usable "modelling", reverb, and stereo effects. Same live sound, with nearly the same live playing capabilities as the xts.

The 2.0 guts were put into "pocket pods" which I also have one of. I never liked the 2.0s. It's my "couch modeller".

I've still got my Podxt and it's my "first call" for "better" gigs, though the Zoom G2Nu is far more bang for the buck and easier to tote around. Lost or broke the power supply? Runs a full week's worth of gigs on two Luthium AAs. A FULL night on two AAs.

Hard to beat Podxts overall.

JMHO.

Off to the Gateway Elks to play hard through my Marrs Proffessional Retrofit/Hilton/G2Nu/BluesJr/Frontman65r with Webers. Laurence small cords.

:)

I've got the 2.0 and a Pod Pro that I use in the studio along with a Lexicon MX200 for reverb recording direct and it's worked fine for me. I started using my Nashville 112 preamp out into the line in on the back for re-amping. It gives more amp sounding. I'm using the Vox AC 30 with a 2-12 cab. It works for me. I hate the Pod's reverb. I know the XT has better verbs.

I've been using the Pod-XT for steel ever since our band went all in-ear a couple years ago. I've tried several other pre-amps but the Pod-XT sounds best in my earbuds, I assume it has to do with the amp modeling/speaker cab simulator, since the other pre-amps I tried do not have this. I'm sure I have barely scratched the surface of what it can do, I just recently started using Gearbox to do edits on my laptop, it's pretty cool. I would like to talk with other POD players that are using IEMs.

I use my POD XT to record directly into the computer, especially when I can't make noise in the house by miking amps.

My favourite settings depend on what instrument I'm playing:

Clean electric guitar, electric twelve string guitar, or bass: 'Blackface Lux' setting (clean Fender sound).

Distorted electric guitar: 'Plexi Jump Lead', 'Plexi Variac', and 'J800' settings (Marshall sounds).

Pedal steel guitar: 'Plexi' or 'Plexi Jump Lead' (Marshall sounds).
Sho-Bud Pro III + Marshall JMP 2204 half stack = good grind!

I've used an XT for years, but lately I just throw a Pocket POD into my Pak-a-Seat for playing out.
It feeds into a powered speaker cabinet.

I use one for effects. I made a PODXT controller to clip on the leg of my guitar to make life easier.

Any interested can read about it here:

re:can your unit also toggle between the PODs modeling presets?"

Mike,

My control box was designed specifically to provide a one button push to select the channels I have pre-programed, for playing live. I never liked the knobs to try to access what channel I wanted. When you turn the effects knob on your PODXT you can scroll through your channels. I cannot do that however, I can select any of the channels available with a one button push but it's limited to the number of buttons available and in this design it's 8. Also, although I only have 8 buttons in this design I could add more.

For Example: When I press button 1 = phase - no amp(channel 18D) or button 5 I have Leslie(channel 19C)

Here's a example list of channels available. I use channels 17, 18, 19,20 (A B C D). I only programmed the ones I was interested in. The channles go from 1 ABCD to 32ABC . Some channels like 32 only have ABC and not ABCD.

PDF to show MIDI selectable channels(from the users manual): http://l6c.scdn.line6.net/data/l/0a0600 ... nglish.pdf

It's too hard to see the numbers in the picture, try the PDF or use the effects control on the PODXT and you will see the channel numbers change. I can program a button for any of those channels.

Image

For example: User Channel 20D You can press one button on the controller to retrieve channel 20D which can be setup for any effect such as Digital delay, tub preamp etc. You can select what you want on that channel from the PODXT controls or the editor program. Once the changes are saved, you can re-call them via Midi because Channel 20D has a button assigned to it.

Example 2: I don't have a button for the tuner but I could add it by programming a button for channel Tuner Midi control 65. Once it's programmed I can press a button to recall it when it's needed.

That looks pretty cool Bob. I have my signature sound set up as the default, an alternate one set in slot 2 and a dobro simulator in slot 3. Those are the only settings and sounds I use.

Bear in mind that amplification itself is a stretch for the people I play with and our audience. These folks generally frown on electric instruments. They understand that the steel is inherently electric, but would prefer an unamplified one, if there was any such thing. things like flanging, chorus, echo and distortion would be a major turn off. I only use a tiny bit of compression and reverb.
