New Lap Steelin' Blog

Post by Mike Neer »

I've started a blog on all things lap steel guitar related. I hope to be able to add new material to it every few days. I have a bunch of lessons, transcriptions, reviews, music, etc. in mind. Right now there is a 6 string version of an arrangement of Giant Steps for C6/A7. A little easier than the 8 string version I posted here a few months ago.

I like posting a lot of this type of stuff here, but having a blog enables me to keep it all in one convenient place. Hope you find time to check it out.

Well, so far, I have managed to misspell my own name during the blog registration process.
As Word Press apparently will not allow the changing of a user name once it is registered to a particular email address, I will henceforth be known as, and have my name legally changed to Dom McGregor.
It has a certain ring.

I had that problem last evening as well. Managed to get past most of them by doing some refreshes in the browser. Feels like the server is overloaded...

Excellent!
Just subbed.
This will be a real help to ease me out of the open D/E comfort-zone.
Thanks Mike!

Hey, Mike, it looks great. One blog question-can you put MP3 up on the blog server or do you have to link to somewhere else? I imagine you can put photos up but curious about how you work the sound files.

Mike, one other technical question-what software are you using to make your notation/tab?

Orville, I use Tabledit and then I save them as pdfs using another program called PDF995s. I'm too cheap for one of those expensive engraving programs. Hell, I still write everything out by hand.

Loved your last blog. Really nailed it. I got into steel exactly how you said, from the Wayne Hancock, Hank 3 side of things. Western swing is now an obsession with me and my little band. We are trying to get into it after starting as a trad rockabilly, country outfit. Love the jazzy chords and tandem gtr/steel arrangements. Oak Hill Drifters on facebook if anyone wants to check us out. Still have the rockabilly edge but big dose of swing happening. I just love it. Just got my wife a Ukulele and sitting down with some basic hawaiian music. I only do the rock/sacred/lidley sound when asked to at church or something. Not really my thing but I respect it. I dont listen to any new radio pop country at all. Just nothing there for me. Thank God for the indie acts. Vance Terry was a blast. Cant even imagine what Joaquin Murphy and Tom Morrell are doing, but I am having a blast trying to follow their footsteps. I love the sound of the old 6th and 13th chord tunings through a 30 watt tube amp. Just my favorite sound. I use A6 instead of C6, and it really is the go to tuning. So clean and utility minded. Esp when trying to follow charts at church. I would like to see some Bm7 or whatever m7 you are using. I have my Rondo SX set to that one just for fun to learn. Appreciate much what you are doing Mike. It is really fun to read and use. Thank you , TC

Your hand written music looks pretty sharp, if you'll pardon the pun. Very readable...

Thanks for all the kind words, guys, I really appreciate it.

I started another post called "Anatomy of a chord solo" which was inspired by Andy Volk sending me an arrangement of his of "A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square." It's basically a breakdown of how I would go about arranging a chord melody, starting with the most simple melodic/harmonic combination.

I can already see that this is going to take up way more of my time than I'd really like (well, moreso my wife), but I work fast and make addendums/corrections as I can.

On The Sunny Side Of The Street

Post by Mike Neer »

I've added another chord melody arrangement--in this case the first 2 verses of "On The Sunny Side Of The Street" with the rest to follow, as well as some treatments of it.
