distance from pickup to string

Post by Thomas Butler »

I'm just wondering if there is an optimum distance between strings and pickup.

I just took the George L out of my LDG and put the original pickup back in it - James Morehead was right - BIG tone difference.

I don't know if there's an "ideal" height but I like to get mine as high as I can just before my right hand can accidentally make the strings pop contacting the pole pieces.

If its a single coil or the magnets are showing, 2 quarters (money) starting point, and if magnets are not showing 1 quater is usually the norm or starting point. Hope this helps

I always set them at 1/8 inch. That is about the thickness of a Quarter.

Again, the p/u-brand is quite important! If you're using a Lawrence L-710 (in which the magnets are showing) the space between the strings and the magnets must be 3/16”, ‘minimum’!
