Guess the mystery steel players (WARNING- Spoiler inside)

Post by Dan Tyack »

I recently was given a copy of a very rough live recording featuring two steel players. One of the players is pretty well known to this forum, see if you can guess.

Hints:

-This was a 4 piece band (bass, drums, two steels)
-Allegedly recorded in 1979

Here are a couple of songs:

You've Got Me (Right Where You Want Me)

Lone Star Beer and Bob Wills Music

I'll take a stab at it and say Jeff Newman is one of the steelers.

Here's another clue, if I may. At least one of these steelers has been known to use a can of WD-40 instead of a bar, as needed.

Sorry, Dan, but I couldn't pass that up.

That's okay, as long as he doesn't use it to lubricate his guitar!

Two more hints:

Both steel players were playing the same brand of steel, and the brand was not Emmons, Sho Bud, MSA, or Zum.

Both players played in the same nationally known band in the following 18 months (not at the same time).

I don't think Carter was making guitars in 1979...

Is it Bobby Black and Lucky Oceans? And were they both playing Franklins?
Both of them played with Asleep at the Wheel in the following 18 months.

I'll second Dave with Dan and Lucky, both with Franklins and both with Asleep at the Wheel.

Let's see....

The CDs from which these cuts were taken have titles: "the Franklin Brothers", which indicates that Franklin guitars were used.

Bobby Black, Lucky Oceans, and I all played Franklin guitars and played with Asleep at the Wheel within 18 months of this recording.

However, at the time of this recording, Lucky was preparing to move to Australia, and wasn't available for the gig.

Which leads to the logical conclusion:

It was Bobby Black and myself...

Thanks to Shorty for sending me the CD, and especially thanks to all who participated, especially Ricky for his guess (that made my day, for sure).

Trivia: Lucky Ocean's main pedal steel is the Franklin that I played on these recordings. I sold it to him just before I started with the Wheel.

For those of you who might wonder who is who:

If it sounds like the steel player is shamelessly ripping off Buddy Emmons and/or Paul Franklin licks, it's me. If it sounds like an original voice on the steel, it's Bobby.

I have found my own voice since this recording, but at the time this was done, I had just spent a year locked up in a closet learning the C6th neck. Mostly Buddy Emmons and Paul Franklin slowed down recordings. Well they let me out of the closet to play my 6 day a week club gig, but other than that, I was obsessed with learning the C6th neck, which I figured I would never learn doing road gigs out of Nashville.
