Pac-a-seat recommendations

Hi,

I would appreciate recommendations for a pac-a-seat. I will be playing a lap steel, either on a Mark Roeder stand or on my lap, and don't carry much gear. Priorities are comfort and light weight.

I'm still using the original Sho-Bud pack a seat I bought back in the 1970s, but the new lightweight Steel Seat seats have been getting good reviews elsewhere on this forum.

Walker makes a Traveler model that is very light weight and is the most comfortable seat I've ever sat on.

I've noticed that both the SteelSeat and the Walker seats have the latches in front (hinges in the rear). Do your legs bump into the latches while seated? Doesn't that bother you (i.e. scrape your legs up)?

First off thanks to Brad and Rick for the kind words.

I make 3 models - Lite (light weight and will fit under an airplane seat) SlimLine (about the size of many other companies models) and the Original for lots of storage space.

The original post was for a light weight seat and that you do not want to carry much gear. That is exactly what the Lite was designed for and before I purchased the steelseat company Thom Beeman told me to build the light weight seat for that part of the market.

I have had several steel players (and other musicians for that matter) tell me that they could become pack rats with the larger seats. Some replace a larger seat and use the Lite for traveling.

I can make what ever height needed and can also add a Back Rest if requested - some use them for a little break between songs for example on a gig.

I do not and will not compair my seats to any one elses seat. All three of us that build seats and have been mentioned here make good seats or we could not stay in business in the steel guitar family.

I use (as a standard) a firm cushion and have built some with other options. My whole idea is to build what customers want.

If you leave the front latch half way open (where the latch is horizontal to the floor), it will hurt, especially when you slide into your seat. It typically will happen only once. You will learn very quickly to look down to make sure the latch is closed and secured.

Without a back on a Lite I have put the latch on the side.

- the open seat is on the end and the other one was on the back

Since this started with a light weight seat the above photo shows one that opens on the end. (Note: WITHOUT a back rest) Could also be on other models with out a back rest too, just have had no one ask for the others that way.

You can always take a hack saw and shorten the legs.

Well Chris - I have made some 18" the same as a chair for people that have shorter legs. I have made them from 18" up to 25" - that is part of the custom order deal. One of the people I made an 18" for said that they had been carrying 2 bags of stuff and now only the steel, amp and steelseat.

I'm not short (I'm 6'1), I just don't like to sit that high when I play steel. My bag with my bar and picks goes in the guitar case and my volume pedal goes in the back of my amp. I'm just not big on extra stuff to haul around. I play a Fender Dual Professional and the length of those old legs perfectly suits a regular chair.

I can see the benefit for pedal steel players, just not for me.

I just sold another one to a bass player and have sold to guitar players as well as keyboard players - some just want a little Lite model for a few things.

Hay - I know they are not for everyone --- not a problem.

Joe - It looks to me like you could build a seat with a back on it and still have room on the sides to put the latches on the sides, way up near the front corners. Is there real estate there to do it?
