Willie Nelson in Time magazine

Post by Barry Blackwood »

Is there a point where country becomes so pop that it stops being country music?

Sure. In my opinion, it's a little watered down now. The mainstream country music that I hear--to me, it's not really country, and it's not really anything. So it may be pleasing to the ear, and that's great, but as far as I'm concerned, it's not country music.

While we are seeing a huge increase in corn [diabetics take note] in most products we consume, "country music" could actually stand a bit more corn. :D

True, Joachim, although I don't think he ever tried to pass it off as country.

I heard he got a haircut???? Does this mean his career will go downhill?
Someone said it looked kinda fluffy, like a girl's haircut. Are we gonna start calling Willie Willamina?

(PS Just kidding, I love Willie)

IMHO when Country Music starts sounding Pop it becomes Western Swing. Western Swing had it's roots in the 30's with the likes of Bob Wills, Milton Brown, etc. It really took off in the War Years of the 40's. In many cases it was Pop Music without the Horns or sometimes with a single Trumpet or Sax included in the Band.
