After all the debate on "TONE", I can't believe someone has not taken issue with Le Bobsters Tips on tone? Does this mean he has settled it once and for all? Is there no one amongst us to challenge this man?

Actually, I think he got it right.

Well, I sent my response directly to Bobbe and he had the nerve to disagree with me.

Here's what I wrote:

Regarding tone, you really can't compare steel cabinets to marimba keys - it's apples to oranges. (I play marimba, in case you didn't know.) On a marimba, the keys actually *generate* the note. The quality of the note IS the quality of the key material. On a steel guitar, the strings - not the cabinet - serve the same functions as the keys of a marimba.

You could compare the steel cabinet to the *resonator tubes* of a marimba, and you'd be closer to the mark. The resonators keep the note alive after its been struck, and the quality of their construction plays a large part in the tone of the instrument. The analogy isn't perfect, but it's a lot closer than the "marimba keys to psg cabinet" comparison.

Personally, I think tone is all in the hands and black guitars and now..........marimbas!

I thought it was a very thought provoking piece of Bobbe's on steel guitar cabinets and their construction. I don't believe that anyone has yet fully managed to fully explain why the Emmons push pull has this unique clarity and extraordinary tone. However, this is the first reference that I have seen concerning the cut out section of a push pull body (that facilitates the electrics) as possibly one of the factors that could be affecting the tone. Interesting view.

All I know is that having a large amount of pedal steel guitars pass under my fingers over the years, my push pull is hugely different tone-wise to anything else that I have played.
