Wow! This is great stuff! Thanks so much to Jim, Mike, Robert, David, et al. for your knowledge!

Even as we type, I've got a BIAB track playing an Eb7 in various styles and working over the positions y'all suggested to familiarize myself with these ultra-cool pockets.
My rig: Infinity and Telonics.

Son, we live in a world with walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with steel guitars. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg?

Robert, that would be Eb Lydian Dominant, otherwise known as the Bb Jazz Minor (melodic minor ascending) scale.

Not related to LCC, other than its also as far as possible from the "which steel sounds better" or "look at my shiny new geetar" threads....

Pentatonic Substitution

I found this on the web

http://jazzmando.com/pentatonic_ffcp.shtml

and then bought and am working from this book

http://www.amazon.com/Mel-Bay-presents- ... p_t_1#noop

A few quick examples

Cmaj7
Old School: C Pentatonic C D E G A
Upgrade: D Pentatonic D E F# A B
You get: 9, (3), +11, 6, 7
Relation to root: Plus one step

Cm7
Old School: Eb Pentatonic (Cm Pentatonic) Eb F G Bb C
Upgrade: Bb Pentatonic Bb C D F G
You get: (7), (1), 9, 11, (5)
Relation to root: Down one step (up m7)

C7
Old School: C Pentatonic C D E G A
Upgrade: Bb Pentatonic Bb C D F G
Better Upgrade: Gb Pentatonic (Alt chord) Gb Ab Bb Db Eb
You get: b5, b13, b7, b9, +9
Relation to root: Plus diminished 5th (tritone)

Cm7b5
Ab Pentatonic Ab Bb C Eb F
You get: b13, b7, (1), (3), 11
Relation to root: Plus m6

My C6 tuning has two D notes so this concept works great and lays out very logically, but pentatonics are pretty available on the standard C6 also of course.

Good call posting the pentatonics in the thread. These are great tools also.
