We are in Hawaii playing some USO shows and staying at The Outrigger Reef hotel on Waikiki Beach. Last evening I could hear steel guitar coming from the courtyard. I went down to investigate and there was a young man named Jeff Au Hoy playing an old original Rickenbacher fry pan. He plays great! Very nice atmosphere with the trio playing along with the tiki torches and waves rolling in.
Edited for the spellcheckers, again.
What the heck. Okies aren't suppose to be able to pronounce these names, let alone spell them.

Lucky you, to not only be here (even tho you caught us in a slight rainy spell), but you were fortunate to hear Jeff Au Hoy, one of the best steelers in the state. Jeff has been at it roughly 10 years and sounds like the great old timers that helped make the Hawaiian steel guitar famous. Bugga sounded almost as good when he first started, he's a natural. He's also a superb rhythm guitarist, pianist, bassist, singer, and who knows what else as well.
Thanx for mentioning the gig, even I have major trouble catching him play. He's like our little secret, even to us!
What is your playing itenerary? I'd like to hear the band if it's open to the public.
Ron, I think it's closed to the public. It's a welcome home celebration for two divisions returning from Iraq. We will be at Scolfield Barracks. We are going over at noon and I'll get the details then. I'll let you know if I can get you in. (Of course you know I'll be using pedals).
Randy, I got a camo hat, does that count?
Said the man with tears running down...
Anyway, have fun!
PS, for an easy way to find more steel stuffs while you're here, check out my steel site www.hwnsge.5u.com
Try to catch Bobby Ingano. He said he'd be with Martin Pahinui this Sunday eve, as usual. Maybe I'll see you there.
Randy; The first night when my wife and I moved to Honolulu, Dec. ’79; I sat in on Billy Hew Len's S-8 JB Frypan, at the Luau on the beech at the Outrigger! We lived at the Marina Hotel Apartments on Heburon,(sp) near there for about 6-months. We moved back to Nashville to be closer to my aging parents in 06/80.

Hey Ron, you win again.
You beat Perfect George in correcting Randy's Diamond Back.
I'll bet Walkakey sends shivery chills up George's spine.
Thanks for straightening us out,George. I always thought it was Honalula.
Wally
I always have a little trouble spelling some of the locations in Honolulu! That's the reason for kinda beating around the bush when discribing my locations while living there in 1980!
By the time I made it to the top of "Diamond Head" I had a few more names to call it. It is a breathtaking view when you get to the top. Problem was I didn't have much breath left!
You should have heard us trying to pronounce the street names.
On second thought, maybe Garmin shouldn't change a thing . . . if people pronounce the Hawaiian street names wrong, it would make more sense to them when they hear the names pronounced wrong on the GPS.
I got your email ok and I am pleased that you are enjoying sightseeing around the Island as well as playing a few gigs in various places. If you run across Casey Olsen tell him hello for me. And all the other steel players too. I hear a lot of Jerry Byrd phrasing in his playing. Mary and I went over to Honolulu 21 years in a row supporting the Jerry Byrd shows - Blue Dolphoin Room was the first trip to hear Jerry but mostly at the Ala Moana hotel. He always had his two sidekicks with him. Kalani Fernandes and Hiram Olsen. Scotty
Are we so PC we can't leave an innocent mistake and have some laffs without the thread becoming weird and confusing for later readers with this
'correction'?
This was a cool and revealing thread thanx to Randy.
