yeah use the terminal. you need to set your default soundcard back to sound blaster. did that happen after a reboot?

What I had to do was open my bios settings and disable the built in sound card. As you see ubuntu chooses the built in over the added as the default. There is a configuration file that needs to be changed by hand so that you dont have to mess with bios. I cant remember where it is right off, Ill dig in my computer tomorrow and find it so you can just copy mine since we have the same card.

as far as the commands I sent you for cd and dvd playback, what you do is save the series of commands to a file, then move the file to your /bin directory. Ill post more tomorrow as I dont have much time at the moment.

crap I gave you a bad command, sorry

do that without the minus sign

Code: Select all

asoundconf list
your output should be the same as mine, but with your intel card that you dont want listing as well.
mine is:

Code: Select all

inoculos@inoculos-desktop:~yes master?$ asoundconf list
Names of available sound cards:
CA0106
you should also get CA0106 in the list.

If that is the case, then do this

Code: Select all

sudo asoundconf set-default-card CA0106
then reboot
That should do it.

how do you hook that to your sound card? is it your speakers into a hub, then one 1/8 jack into the card?

I got a few shows out of town this weekend, Im not exactly sure about surround sound fixes, but I will look into it on sunday. In the mean time try this first
I had the same problem with 5.1 sound.

there are options in the volume controll preferences. I think there are "switches" and "options" or so you have to enable.
I simply checked every checkbox I could see.
And now I can controll the different channels individually which was not(!) possible under windows.
from
http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic ... questions/

If that doesnt work try:

Code: Select all

alsamixer -c 0
and toy with the levels while a song is playing

Use the arrow keys to navigate the mixer (left right to select a channel, up down for volume levels), tab to switch pages within the mixer, and the m key to mute unmute.

Hopefully this will do it. If not we will have to add modules or alter a configuration file.
The big difference between Ubuntu and crunchbang is that crunchbang ignores a lot of the new school easy to use configuration tools in favor of the old less resource using configuration tool. So we have been doing this the old school way. A little more painful but in the end you should have a more powerful system.

We need to create a configuration tool for your sound driver. We will create a file called .asoundrc, and tell it to divide the sound 5 ways.

In a terminal do this

Code: Select all

sudo gedit ~/.asoundrc
cut and paste all this into the text editor

Code: Select all

pcm.card0 {

  type hw

  card 0

  mmap_emulation true

}

pcm.!output {
type dmix
ipc_key 1234
ipc_key_add_uid 1
slave {
pcm "card0"
period_time 0
period_size 1024
buffer_size 8192
rate 44100
}
bindings {
0 0
1 1
}
}

#
# DSNOOP output device
#
pcm.!input {
type dsnoop
ipc_key 4321
ipc_key_add_uid 1
slave {
pcm "card0"
period_time 0
period_size 1024
rate 44100
}
}

#
# ASYM duplex device
#
pcm.!duplex {
type asym
playback.pcm "output"
capture.pcm "input"
}

#
# Make the duplex device default
#
pcm.!default {
type plug
slave.pcm "duplex"
}

#
# OSS Compability

pcm.!dsp0 {
type plug
slave.pcm "duplex"
}

ctl.!mixer0 {
type hw
card 0
}

# line added to default to attempt surround sound fix

pcm.shared_surround {
    type plug
    slave.pcm "surround51"
    slave.channels 6
    route_policy duplicate
}

save that file (hit control s), close it and reboot.

If you get no sound or something weird we will just delete it and try something else.

These config files are the way linux users customize their systems, and that is where the learning curve really pays off. There is not much you cant do once you get the hang of these. Unfortunately it takes a lot of poking around to get it right.

need to find these later:

Kinda figured that would happen, but was worth a shot. Lets simplify it and see what happens.

re-open .asoundrc

Code: Select all

sudo gedit ~/.asoundrc
delete everything in there,

paste this in

Code: Select all

pcm.!default {
    type plug
    slave.pcm "surround51"
    slave.channels 6
    route_policy duplicate
}
save and close it

reboot and see what happens

awesome :D congratulations!
http://www.ihighfive.com/

youll want to either use your file browser (WINDOWS + F) and chose your cd drive, or open the photo viewer. right click your desktop and it will be in graphics. gpicview I think

Personally I like a program called gthumb

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install gthumb
run it by typing

Code: Select all

gthumb

also just so you know what happened here,
after figuring out that the wrong sound card was used as default we did the following:
  • 1. found all sound cards
    2. set the proper one as default
    3. made a configuration file
this is the basic procedure for any hardware problem. on top of all that we used to have to hunt for drivers as well, but that problem is rapidly going away.

dont forget to periodically run your updates!

wow,

I know linux hates that ca0106 chip but I havn't seen this repetitive of a problem before.

1. Did you lose sound after a reboot?
2. did you disable the other sound card in bios?

1.restart alsa

Code: Select all

sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils restart
check sound

2. restart the desktop like this:

Code: Select all

alt>printscreen>k
hold all 3 down at once.
log back in and see if there is sound

3. If sound didnt return,
this is the command to set the sound card

Code: Select all

sudo asoundconf set-default-card CA0106
Try the 3 in that order 1, by 1 and see if any work. Usually the first one is enough
