Some boomer nostalgia from Stu and Dan

Post by Dan Tyack »

Stu Schulman and I have been talking about doing a steel instrumental album of 60s-70s pop and R&B tunes, so a while ago he sent me some backing tracks for the Blind Faith song 'Can't Find My Way Home'. I finally got around to putting some lap steel and dobro on it.

Blind Faith Song

Suggestions for songs, anybody?[/url]

Let me be the first to say that's really a sweet version of "Can't Find My Way Home". Nice job on a great song, Dan. Can't wait to hear more.

Thanks Matt,

I should say that's that's the demo in terms of sound quality. Also, Stu will be playing a whole lot of the steel on what we release (in addition to all of the other instruments).

Here are some requests I've gotten:

Love and Happiness (Rev Al Green)
Little Wing (Hendrix and many others)
Anything that Bill Withers put out (Ain't no Sunshine, Use Me, Lean on Me)

Suggestions are welcome.

Speaking of bass players, did you play bass for Jonathan Edwards by any chance, Stu ?
I got a few Edwards reissues recently, on the Collectors Choice label.
Great music.... With a Stuart Schulman on bass...

Not to hijack my own thread, but check this Jamerson youtube clip: Jamerson part

I love the motown stuff, but I'm also quite fond of the Memphis take on R&B.

Dan,
Amen brother, I was a bass player back in those days (not a very good one) and I loved the bass parts on that Motown stuff but the music itself always struck me as too sterile even though there were tons of great tunes and vocals. All the Stax stuff was just dripping with soul and that's what I spent most of my time in the mid 60's listening to--great stuff!!

Dan and Stu, you could do a whole CD (or maybe 2 or 3) of that stuff.

(Rant:) We need players like you to do this sort of thing, and not to simply market the CDs to steel players, but to the public at large. We need to show the world that the steel can be used to play more than just country music. It's not a country instrument, it's an instrument. Period. (End of rant.)

Olli,No that's the other Stuart Schulman and we know each other which is really strange.I haven't seen Stuart since 1977 Jonathon is coming up here soon so I will try to find the other Stuart. He's the reason I shortened mine to Stu.

Nice track, Dan.

More Boomer music porn might include a medley of George Harrison tunes--a natural for your talents given GH's use of slide guitar.

I can already hear your PedaBro track for a medley of "Within You Without You" and "Here Comes the Sun"...

"Wind Cries Mary" Always thought that would make a good steel/slide/dobro song.

Dan,
Is that a Pedal-Bro or regular Dobro on the track?

Nice track! Fine interpretation of a favorite tune. I look forward to seeing both of you at the Phoenix show.

Jim,

It's a Mike Audridge model Beard 6 string dobro. It's tuned to DADGAD on that tune (it's actually a couple of dobro tracks).

I always thought Eric Clapton's "You Look Wonderful Tonight" would sound good on the dobro or a sacred steel version.

I've always liked that song, Steve. It probably would be better instrumentally (without the sappy lyrics) :).

John, I agree that Wind Cries Mary is another great song in this vein. I also have done Little Wing on pedal steel and lap, that works pretty well.

I just listened to that song again. Man what a genius Jamerson was. Who ever heard of a song where the bass player never plays the root? It's an integral part of the song, giving it that unresolved feel ('What *does* become of the broken hearted?').

OK Stu, you've sold me. I could never listen to that song because of Diana Ross's insipid performance, but it's a great song.

I could never listen to ANY of Diana Ross's records for the same reason. But the songs themselves are often terrific. They just need better interpretations, (Preferably as steel guitar instrumentals.)

Dan,I'm talking about David Ruffin's version,I've got it really close to the original,I talked to my bass player friend who is a Jamerson fan and he said that he heard a story that when Jamerson showed up for the session he told everyone before hearing the song that he would never play the root?and they said yeah right.Scary stuff.
