"Questions?, and Answers!" Bishop R.P. Hall

Post by Bishop Ronnie P Hall »

Hello my fellow steelers,
I am posting this topic bcause of several inquiries over the months since I have been a member of the forum. So I thought I would try to satisfy the main curious one.
" Do you play the steel using the pedals as well as Lap style?" The answer is, I used to play both Pedal, and Lap along with several other instruments. I have played these instruments for 57 years. But on July 18th.1995, while waiting to have a flat tire changed by AAA road services on the freeway, while attempting to give the serviceman my key for my wheel locks, I was struck from behind by a drunk driver who slammed into me at 55 miles an hour, at the side of the freeway. The result was, I lost both of my legs from the knees down. Hence, I cannot play Pedal Steel in the normal sense. However, I am in the process of modifying my Carter steel, my Sho Bud, and my Fender 400 with knee levers, so that I can get back to stretching those strings like I used to. As I say, I`m only revealing this, not to gain your sympathy, but to express my determination to go on, as a musician who plays the style that I can play, in the hope that by my struggle, someone else might be encouraged to keep going on in spite of disappointments.
The simple "single string note style" that I play, began in the african american holiness church tradition, that became known as, "Sacred Steel" of which in spite of my physical challenge, is a community of which I am proud to have been a part of for many, many, years.
I would like to leave this little bit of a song that I picked up from a dear friend of mine that I came to know here on the forum.
By the way, that is me playing "all" of the instruments on the back up tracks, as on all of my efforts.
PS: I hope this explains some of reasons I play the way I do! Be Blessed! :)

Bishop Ronnie, I don't really know what to say...except that your courage and determination in the face of adversity is so inspirational. I don't know much about "sacred steel" music, but I've always felt that it is an expression and testament to a way of life much more than a just a music style.

I always enjoy your clips. Fine display of musicianship. May God bless you and keep on pickin' the steel guitar your way.
Cheers, JO.

Bishop Hall, what an inspiration you are and like Hook said, " I'm glad that you're a part of this forum". If it wasn't for this forum, I'd never have had a chance to hear you. Keep up the good playing. Ray

Losing one's legs is a pedal steel guitarist's worst nightmare. It's so good to hear that you've overcome that and not let it hold you back. You're an inspiration. Keep a pickin'. :D

Bishop Ron, that was one enjoyable video, ol' Bob Wills must be smiling down from Heaven hearing your playing. I especially liked the riff you did at around 2:03 on the video, I'm gonna learn that one for myself. Great having you on the Forum.....JH in Va.

Mighty sweet and uplifting, Bishop. Thanks for sharing your music and your story. Maybe you shouldn't worry about pedals much. Not everybody needs them. :)

Well Bishop Hall, it turns out that you're just a good ole country boy like the rest of us. Really enjoyed the treatment that you gave "Deep Water".
You breathed some new life into a fine old tune

Hey Brothers!,

To: Jerry Hayes:I Am honored, and encouraged by the Bob Willis comment, and I trust that any "riff" that came forth around 2:03 had to be something I bumped into by accident, anyway, it`s yours my friend, go for it! :)

To: Dave Doggett: You are still a champion of champions my friend. Thanks so much for the encouragement! :D

Bishop, its very refreshing to hear "Deep Water" played in your style. I just love it. Perhaps we can get more Sacred Steelers posting video clips here. Although I don't play that style, it warms my heart to see and hear it. Very soulful.

First, let me express my sympathy for the loss of your legs.

However, you can still have a steel with a full compliment of pedal changes. Gene Fields over at GFI can build you a steel with 3 wrist levers, in addition to your knee levers. he's done it before for another player who also lost his legs.

Talk to him. He'll do right by you.

Ron, I'd never listened to your music before this post, and I was so impressed that I listened to all your other numbers posted on YouTube. You've got an enormous talent. I was really taken aback. :D
