I am posting this topic bcause of several inquiries over the months since I have been a member of the forum. So I thought I would try to satisfy the main curious one.
" Do you play the steel using the pedals as well as Lap style?" The answer is, I used to play both Pedal, and Lap along with several other instruments. I have played these instruments for 57 years. But on July 18th.1995, while waiting to have a flat tire changed by AAA road services on the freeway, while attempting to give the serviceman my key for my wheel locks, I was struck from behind by a drunk driver who slammed into me at 55 miles an hour, at the side of the freeway. The result was, I lost both of my legs from the knees down. Hence, I cannot play Pedal Steel in the normal sense. However, I am in the process of modifying my Carter steel, my Sho Bud, and my Fender 400 with knee levers, so that I can get back to stretching those strings like I used to. As I say, I`m only revealing this, not to gain your sympathy, but to express my determination to go on, as a musician who plays the style that I can play, in the hope that by my struggle, someone else might be encouraged to keep going on in spite of disappointments.
The simple "single string note style" that I play, began in the african american holiness church tradition, that became known as, "Sacred Steel" of which in spite of my physical challenge, is a community of which I am proud to have been a part of for many, many, years.
I would like to leave this little bit of a song that I picked up from a dear friend of mine that I came to know here on the forum.
By the way, that is me playing "all" of the instruments on the back up tracks, as on all of my efforts.
PS: I hope this explains some of reasons I play the way I do! Be Blessed!
