Tony Booth

Post by Leroy Riggs »

What a voice he has! I have started buying more and more of his music from Amazon.

Does anyone know who played most of his 60s-70s sessions?

The steeler's style was unique on those oldies and that style is not around today.

hey Leroy, on the "Keys in the Mailbox" album, with "Corner Bar", "Cinderella", etc. the player is JayDee Maness. Absolutely some of my favorite steel playing of all time! If you don't have that one, you should order it next. Tony is still out there pickin' and he still sounds fantastic.

His Capitol albums from the 1970s are all great. Mostly J.D. Maness on steel, some of them also have Jerry Brightman doing the steel work.

Kind Regards, Walter

Yes and the "heart of texas records" release is Johnny Cox on that. But yep; JD be the man on that early stuff....awesome work.

Just to clarify...

So there's his recent Heart Of Texas CD,"Is This All there is to a Honky-tonk", with great playing (of course!) by Johnny Cox ... Are they following that up with a compilation of some of his old Capitol stuff with Jaydee? Because that sure would be pretty cool, and I'm sure a lot of us would like to hear more...

I couldn't find anything about it in a quick online search... Got a link or more info?

I got several emails also confirming JD as the steeler on the earlier albums. Certainly impressive steeling! :)

Lonesome7-7203 - 1972 - Tracks 4,5,6 & 7 - J.D. on steel

The Keys In The Mailbox - 1972 - Tracks 1, 8, 10, 12 & 13 - J.D. on steel

This Is Tony Booth - 1973 - Tracks 2 & 9 - Jerry Brightman on steel

Y'all should definitely get as much of Tony's music as is available. He was California's shuffle king without a doubt, the West Coast Johnny Bush!.

I had the great pleasure of seeing the Tony Booth Band live at the Palomino Club many, many times, from 1969 until I left LA in 1972. A wonderful band making wonderful music!

I also had the pleasure of working with Tony and some of the band at the after-hour jam sessions at the Imperial Inn in Santa Fe Springs CA during that same period.

Tony's excellent band was himself on lead vocals, Jay Dee on steel, Larry Booth on bass, Archie Francis on drums, Norm Kastner on lead guitar, Glen Kastner on rhythm, and Earl Ball on piano. Great musicians!!
My rig: Infinity and Telonics.

Son, we live in a world with walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with steel guitars. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg?

Not unfortunate, really, when you come to understand that Johnny Booth and Tony Booth are the same person!

He recorded the one album (and also released a couple of singles) before he changed his first name to Tony.

Your cerebral data base is astounding! I've known Tony personally since 1970 and that trivia tidbit was unbeknownst to me. As the youngsters say, "you rock."

I knew that of course. Was said tongue in cheek. Also maybe unknown is the fact that in an interview, the producer said he would never make it - too country.

Dang! My dad had that album, and at the time, I thought it was too square for me (I was 15, and it was 1977, that's my excuse) I would like to get some Tony Booth stuff for the steel guitar work.

You can also download tracks from Tony Booth at www.buckatune.net

The artist actually receives more compensation from www.buckatune.net than from other music providers.

Graham, I have that album and there is magnificent steel on every cut. I'd always assumed it was JD on the entire album.

Ron:
J.D. did the steel on all 3 1972 lp's. The tracks I listed are the 2 songs from that lp on the compilation cd put out and shown in a post above.

Jerry Brightman did all the work on the '73 and '74 lp's.

I didn't see this mentioned, so forgive me if it's been covered:

The Tony Booth LP from '67 has Ralph Mooney on steel.

There's also a 1970 Tony Booth LP for MGM with Buddy Emmons on steel, both are very good, but he really found his feet with the Capitol sides.

I used to see Tony at the Palomino in the early '70's, and when you saw that band you knew you were seeing the real deal.
My fave TB cut... "What A Liar I Am", with Jay Dee on steel.

If anybody is interested in the MGM lp Jason mentions, it is called "On The Right Track" and there are currently 3 copies available on Ebay from $18.00 - $25.00.
