Delivery Times for New Pedal Steels

Post by Tony Palmer »

After coming back from ISGC and seeing all the different brands of steels, I've heard all kinds of conflicting information regarding how long it will take for you to actually get the instrument with your options delivered to you.
If you're willing to go on record, will you mfrs reply to this post with your average delivery time for a customized steel? (e.g.: color choice, pedal arrangement and knee lever set up...no more than that)
Thanks!

Tony,
I only have one pedal steel I ever ordered new from the factory, and thats my Emmons LeGrande III that I got back in '99. At that time I was told 14 weeks and ended up being 16 weeks. NOT BAD IF I SAY SO MYSELF! I ordered the guitar with a laquer cabinet instead of mica, so naturally it takes longer. Also in those days my friend Jack Strayhorn was still at the Emmons Company where he oversaw the building of it. Now I hear it takes at least a year or maybe 2 before they can deliver a guitar. Glad I got mine back then.

I custom-ordered a new Williams last May and got it June 19th, ten days ahead of what Bill Rudolph had originally predicted! He may be busier now (I wish him as much business as his heart desires) but I can swear that the sound, the looks, and the workmanship are all AAAAAAA, and the delivery time was FAST!
I give music lessons on several different instruments in Cambridge, NY (between Bennington, VT and Albany, NY). But my true love is pedal steel. I've been obsessed with steel since 1972; don't know anything I'd rather talk about... www.barryhyman.com

Carter Steel Guitars will build you a custom guitar in a time which compares more than favourably with some of the smaller "boutique" builders. I suggest a trip to their website might prove of interest. They also build Magnum steel-guitars, a very under-rated instrument and terrific value-for-money.
The steel guitar is a hard mistress. She will obsess you, bemuse and bewitch you. She will dash your hopes on what seems to be whim, only to tease you into renewing the relationship once more so she can do it to you all over again...and yet, if you somehow manage to touch her in that certain magic way, she will yield up a sound which has so much soul, raw emotion and heartfelt depth to it that she will pierce you to the very core of your being.

mixed up

Post by Barry Hyman »

I got my dates mixed up talking about how fast Williams is (have been on pain meds post-surgery): I ordered it in March or April and got it in May (May 19th, not June 19th!). Anyway -- turnaround time was less than three months, closer to two.

Rains takes pride in putting your new guitar in your hands in under 30 days from your order. And you won't find a finer guitar.

mullen advertises 'tone to the bone' on their website...so i guess that's a guarantee. can anything else have tone to the bone once they patent it?

David and anyone else that has been around this game knows ---- someone says they want a "standard" steel then the ----- Oh by the way add ................

They are not production line on the shelf items.

The custome stuff simply takes longer.

Where is the wait?, surely it's not making the parts or putting it together, the only reasonable reason for a longer wait mmm  ...let's say two months at the most for a mica steel would be over booked with orders for a one man company, i've read somewhere here in the forum that sho-bud made 30 steel in one day of at one time:\.

just a thought :)
