When playing my Carter, I wear a pair of wide sole walking shoes. They seem to fit the pedals just right. When playing my Double 8 Ric, shoes really don't matter.

I had a favorite cap. It said Jim Beam on it. Sadly, just yesterday, it met the same end as your shoes.

I wear cowboy boots when I'm playing, because of the heels and the firm soles. I admit it's an excuse for my vanity, but it's ok. Certainly shoes would also work, but not as good.

Some of the fastest pickers showing up at shows, for some unknown reason, have been wearing sneakers. I find them cumbersome, and restricting. The sneakers wearers came on strongly about 30 years ago. I'm still trying to learn where the advantages of incorporating footwear of some yet to be identified reason from a least likely footwear can be found, while playing the pedal steel guitar. For me, a fad lowers the otherwise dignified demeanor of accomplished musicians. I prefer lightweight dress slippers.

I"ve found that low-cut cowboy boots, that lace up the front to about the same height as a regular shoe, but shaped like a pointy-toed boot with riding heel works great!

Even better is wearing two RIGHT SHOEs. They curve around in such a way that they clear the A pedcal for C6th neck quite handily.

Many of my gigs allow me to play in tennis shoes. I also have casual dress and dress shoes for various functions. It does not matter much as long as the heel area is smooth and doesn't hang when I pivot my foot.
BTW.. I still have shoes my but got rid of the dog

As a speed picker its either tennis shoe (Sketcher) or Tony Lamas Lizard's with a rding heel!

If i'm there for show, i get by with my Full quil ostrech! If i'm coming to seriously get it done, its my tennis shoe!

About fifteen years ago, I bought a new pair of cowboy boots. My German Shepherd "Hogan" was a puppy then. He decided to eat the left boot... completely destroyed it. The other one was unharmed. I really liked the boots, so I went out and bought another pair just like them. I saved the unharmed boot...just in case something happened. Well, Hogan, decided to eat the same boot again. So, I ended up with two right foot boots. I gave up after than.

There's a swank little club right near where you live and they have the cutest, young little Korean bartender who is missing one leg. I forget which direction it is that she tilts too.

Hal Rugg gave me this tip......soft soled shoes.
He wanted to be able to feel every pressure point of the pedals. I took this to heart. Great advice!
Can't play like Hal but I can feel the pedals.

For me I found boots too restrictive.

Boots and only boots. Doesn't matter whether they're Tony Lamas, Justins or whatever. Right now I'm wearing Ariat. Pointy toe, cowboy heel and tall. It's all I've ever worn playing. (and for anything else)

In 1996, when after a 15 year lay off, I bought a new steel. I played in cowboy boots as I did years ago. In 1998, the steel was stowed due to the damands on my job. In 2002, I got the steel out but had to switch to penny loafers with a thin sole......???????????? ......I don't know what happened.

I played with no shoes for 20 years and I would wear all kinds of socks with one being like Michael Jackson's glittery glove,Christmas,Halloween etc. until I bought a Williams in 2006 which had sharp square pedals.

Now I wear Cowboy boots which at first were hard to get used to but now it no thang.

I also like loafers but I feel goofy wearing them to a gig.

I guess Hal Rugg showed cowboy boots were not holy. In one of Jeffs Jeffran Collage sessions he was a guest picker and Hal played in jogging shoes. Impressed all. cc

I forced myself to learn PSG without shoes (socks or bare feet.) The advantage is that if I go to a gig and the shoes I'm wearing cause any problems I can just take them off and be certain that it'll work!

Otherwise, I prefer black Reebok Classics.
