I wish they'd quit trying to airbrush her into Diva For Consumption, and just let her do what she does best: play the piano.

I am just back from the best seats in the house. Wow! And did I say wow?! What a show! Not only is she a tremendously talented jazz pianist and singer, but her band can really lay down a groove. I loved her drummer especially (Jeff Hamilton); what taste! John Clayton was not on bass tonight but her sub was great too. My son recognized him right away as he teaches in my son's music school at the Univ. of Michigan, so it was fun for him to see him there.

Jeff Hamilton has played with lots of heavies, including the "Hamilton-Clayton Jazz Orchestra", but my favourite is the stuff he did with the Ray Brown Trio, especially when Gene Harris was on piano. Check out "Bam Bam Bam" or "The Ray Brown Trio plus One" (with Ralph Moore on tenor).
Also Monty Alexander's trio show at Montreux in the mid 70's was stellar (bits of it are on YouTube), and also featured John Clayton on bass. All highly recommended.

The Bass Player would be Paul Keller. 1st call in the Detroit area. He has toured with her before and can really drive a band.

I saw him with Russell Malone some years ago at the Bird in Ann Arbor.

Jim, did she have a guitar player? Russell Malone used to play on some of her live shows and recordings, but it's been several years since I've seen him. The last time I saw Diana on TV, she had another guitar player, but I didn't catch his name.
