Gene-You didnt compromise. your CD is as great as if it were done in a Professional studio. Gotta give credit where credit is due. I wish I could engineer as nice a CD as yours....al.:):)

I see that Gene has an electric chair.Hope the drummer doesn't have control of the switch.
Even if he doesn't, all that energy behind that chair has a certain off-putting "energy," as it were!

...but, could it be a Mrs. Jones-activated switch, located to her convenience, to evaluate Mr. Jones's playing, say, one to three short bursts for errors, depending on their gravity?

My spare bedroom looks like this...

Image

And here are my BIAB "real drums"...

There are actually 2 different recording set ups here. My bass playing buddy purchased a Korg D3200 at the same time I purchased an M-Audio Firewire 1814 interface and Sonar recording software. We're currently laying down basics for our bands demo. I LOVE fiddlin' with this stuff!

I'm a drumming veteran and a pedal steel rookie.

Enjoying everyones "stuff".

Brian

PS What I didn't show you is my wifes elliptical trainer in the corner. I guess if I've got 75% of the room full of my gear, and she doesn't complain, I should be thankful, right? ;-)
You can see the reflection of her tennis shoe in the first photo!

I saw this thread and figured I better get in on the action. Here's the gist of it:

Topaz Project 8 24 ch board
2 different computers both running Pro Tools
Digi 002
UA 610-2 preamp
UA 1176 compressor
Avalon 747 compressor
Drawmer 1960 compressor
Manley Dual mono mic pre
dbx 386 mic pre
Drawmer DS404 Gate
Mackie HR824 monitors
Old Ampex 351 tube preamp
assorted Neuman and AKG mics
My new Derby D10
old Carter Starter
in a corner of my wife's sewing room there's a pile of guitars (I don't count anymore, it scares me)

Image

From this angle, there's a '64 Deluxe Reverb, Peavey 112 and Nemesis FET bass amp

Image

Back behind me is where all the crap ends up and I've got a ton of it. I need to clean this mess up.

This is enlightening seeing all these setups!

I hate wires; I'm in the wrong business, and only getting deeper into it, sigh...

WOW.

I'm certainly impressed.

How do you know what to do with all that stuff?

Too much for me. I would spend more time trying to learn how to use that gear, and thusly, take away from focusing on the steel. It really is mind-boggling.

I can't even manage BIAB, Lexicon Lambda, and Cubase LE4 (or something like that).

Then too, I'm a trailer rat and have absolutely no spare room, or room to spare. The physical nature of my surroundings really puts me at a disadvantage. But, also, I don't understand 80-90% of modern digtital recording.

But guys, those really are some outstanding home-studio setups. I wish ya's well in your recording ventures. :)

Dang guys, you have some serious home studio setups. Wow is about all I can say about all pics showed great equipment and great spaces for recording. It seems that just about all of you can do top notch master sessions with your gear and space.

I'm surmising that most of you make a good income with your studios. At one time I had a great little setup with a studio with 456 square feet which is pretty small but I had it divided into 3 separate rooms. I have one for the engineer/control room then a main room which was the biggest for the majority of the band members that usually went direct like Piano, Bass, and other instruments that I can hook up thru the board with a direct line in.

Then I had one more room that doubled for an acoustic overdub room for guitar/vocal/fiddle and any instrument that needed to be miked and isolated and usually the drums used it for the original tracking process then I would switch it around for other acoustic overdubs.

Sometimes it was a pain only having one tight isolation booth so many times I would have the acoustic guitat track with me in the control room and I just had to be quiet.

I can't post any pictures because of my mobility at the moment but as soon as I get my new prosthesis and can ambulate on it I will get back to work and then I'll take some pics of my meager little studio but I have made many CD's and instrumental albums for my pals mostly being song writers and steel guitarists making their own albums to sell at their shows and seminars.

You guys keep your good work and keep those studios busy!!

Bob

I just put my little home studio together, so I thought I'd revive this thread. I'm using the Yamaha AW1600 to mix and record. Thankfully it has eight inputs so I am able to set it up to were I don't need to use my old Tascam analog mixer (the mixer in the foreground of the first picture. The Tascam will go to my band's studio to augment the Digidesign mixer we have). As has been said, the mic pres on the Yamaha are not the greatest and they have pretty low gain, so I am supplementing them with an Electro-Harmonix tube mic pre that is pretty good. I'm only running two mics, so I keep the 57 on one amp and run the condenser through the EH mic pre for the other amp, acoustic guitar, vocals, etc. The Yamaha has two internal effects units that are pretty good and two external sends: I run one send to my pedalboard and then through a filter and then back to the Yamaha, and the other send to an Akai Head Rush then to a tape echo and then back to the board. The Head Rush simulates four playback tape heads, and the Yamaha has enough inputs so that I can use all four "heads" and pan them for different effects and patterns. I use another Head Rush after the guitar for making loops. In addition to the XLR out the EH mic pre also has a 1/4" out, so I can run a microphone through the Head Rush for looping. Some of this is pretty low-fi, but that's okay with me, and overall it is the most versatile and funnest home studio set-up I've had. It is much easier and funner than when I was stuck on being totally analog and running an 8-track tape machine with my old Tascam console. With this I'm not using tape, just the Yamaha and it sounds pretty good, but I do have an old Ampex 600 tape machine on the way that I will use for a second mic pre and maybe some recording if the heads and transport will work well enough. Thanks Greg and Tony for all of your good help with the AW1600--what a cool machine.
My wife finally got sick of looking at all of my stuff and she forced me into this little converted sunroom. I got the curtains, lamp, statues, etc. at a thrift store around the corner from my house.

This is my studio
I think it's the best of both world's because I record through a real analog console with full meter bridge and end up on the PC to mix and master it.
That's my fiddle playing Daughter Savannah in the vocal booth and at the console. :)

My console is a Mackie SR-56 Which is overkill but who cares? I'll be putting two recorders together so I can record 48 tracks at once.
I don't care to record digitally so I use the analog board and record to my 24 track recorder and then dump it to my PC and then to Sonar X2 Producer. I use Windows 8 Professional 64 Bit.

As far as the board, any Mackie, Soundcraft or Allen & Heath with full meter bridge and at least an 8 Bus console would be fine.

I realize my setup isn't the norm buy really, who cares? It works for me just awesome.

Thanks for asking and holler if you have any questions on my setup at wc@wcedgar.com
