1st stupid question

Hello all from a former player who is beginning to get the "joneses" from previous Emmons push/pull addiction. It was initially caused by my band opening dates w/Barefoot Jerry (Russ Hicks) in the 70's, pestering Ron Lashley and Freddy in Burlington, NC about when my steel will ship, getting the "heebie jeebies" trying to learn myself (I could play guitar decently; which is not much help w/feet and knees) fueled by spending a week with Jeff and Fran Newman (seeing/hearing/talking to the man in the black derby, Lloyd Green and Jimmy Crawford) and playing on stage for a few years w/my p/p S10, rosewood mica. I actually wasn't too bad 'cause Jeff knew how to TEACH so well. Can I get an AMEN?
Anyhow, I have today what I am sure to be the 1st of many stupid questions to toss into the mix, so I can get a 'fix' of steel from what appears to be a great forum with an incredible amount of knowledge, experience, opinions, sympathy, for selling my Emmons (insert your own sob story here) and encouragement to get me back in the game.
What I am taking so long to ask is this. I see posts that only say "bump" in the message. What is "bump"?
P.S. Yeah, I saw the Emmons p/p in rosewood mica in the 'for sale' section. It's too bad 7-11's don't keep a lot of cash on hand in my neck of NC.

Bump is simply this: it puts your message to the top of the list of threads as the newest. People selling items like it when their post starts to get buried, so people still see it. Also if someone has a question that isn't getting answered. I just "bumped" your question.

I agree that there are no stupid questions, but many COMMON questions are answered MANY TIMES on the Forum, over the years, and a couple of resources are available to us.

The top right portion of the main Forum window has a header "The Steel Guitar Forum" in RED. Directly below 'The' is a link to two valuable resources: FAQ and Search.

If you look at the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) you will find a topic called 'Formatting and Topic Types'. Under that heading you will find
What does bump mean?

Another useful function, right beside the FAQ link, is SEARCH. It allows you to search for keywords in one or more Forum sections and to filter the results by date, username, and other criteria. It can be frustrating, yielding MANY MANY results, but can also yield a goldmine of info.

bump means to the top

all are methods to bring a post back to the top so people see it. You will see a lot of that, especially in the events forum. Otherwise, posts will get lost before the poster is ready for it to become buried in the sea of postings.

Thanks to all of you and I appreciate the responses. Don't worry, I have a thick skin and a healthy respect for good natured teasing and "let's mess with the new guy" attitude. You cannot have been in bands, bowling leagues, billiards or golf
get togethers without going through the very same kind of "greetings" when you first join. Over time I have learned the most from the very ones who "tease" at first and later show you the how to play the part that has been driving you crazy to learn. Nice to be aboard!

Welcome aboard Walter. Glad ya now know what "bump" means.

I would like to add a few other tidbits to what has already been alluded to in this thread:

1. TTT=To the top. Same as bump!

2. It IS used often to do just as other posters here have mentioned. And particularly so, when selling an item.

The problem with a seller on a forum like this is: there are soooo many selling, that a given thread is quickly over shadowed by others that come in later. Thus the bump/ttt scenario.

3. I would like to add also, that there is another scenario that occurs on this forum and ALL forums, and that is the tendency for ANY given thread to quickly (sooner or later) veer away from its intended purpose.

In some cases it can veer off soooooo completely that there is NO longer (in that thread) even a smidgeon of similarity of why it was begun in the first place. I commend b0b when he steps in and locks this thread to future posts. I just wish this "block" happened more often.

I liken it to a preacher being overtaken by one or more in the congregation upstaging the preacher as they loudly engage in their own private conversation(s) while the preacher is trying to win souls to Christ.

4. Another pet peave, is a thread that given posters use repeatedly to subtly (or directly) vent their animosity towards another poster, and as sure as the sun comes up in the morning, they will ALWAYS exude this venom whenever their intended "target" posts; either in someone else's thread or that target's own thread.

Many other forums limit 'bumps' to one per day in order to keep some people from taking over the board. Some folks do abuse the priviledge, IMO. I've seen people (and/or their friends) bumping hourly on repeated occassions. Seems kinda unfair.

I could not aree with you more.

Also, when an item does not sell, why not accept defeat and quit bumping continuously? This is almost always because the price is too high.

Best to lower the price, or let the thread die of its own.
