Correspondence Courses Available

I have decided to do correspondence courses for beginner and intermediate students. Like the Boot Camp, these courses will be tailored to the individual student, covering areas of interest and needed improvement for the student. Each course will consist of 4 lessons(1 lesson each week)and each lesson will be approximately 1 hour long. Lessons will be done via audio tape and tab. I will return each lesson with comments and instruction. Rhythm tracks will be provided as needed.

I think this will be an acceptable compromise to taking the Boot Camp on the road and be an affordable alternative to those who can't travel to the Boot Camp.

I hope this will catch on. I still plan on doing some Boot Camps too. But this way if you can't get here it's kind of like meeting you half way.

Wonderful idea. Something that has been needed for years. Great for the person who can't afford the cost of travel or the working person who can't afford time off from work to attend the boot camp. I hope it is a monster success for you.

Mike, may I suggest CD's instead of the tapes. CD's stay in tune and one can quickly go to a particular track or location on the CD. Besides, tapes are getting to be more obsolete and can be out of pitch. CD players are smaller and more numerous now.

If I had the c.d. recorder to do it with I would. I'm fully aware of the advantages of c.d.s and if this does well enough I can do it with c.d.s instead of tapes. But, I have to walk before I can run.

Larry's suggestion is a good one. I understand you can get software that will allow you to "rip" a song from a tape, digitize it and store it for very little cost. Once you have it stored, you can easily copy it to a CD. I have "Nero Burning" for making CD's. This may not be the way you want to go right now, but you can research it vary easily. Do a Google search on "Vinyl to CD" and you should get a lot of information on available software, what it will do, its cost, etc. I have also seen discussions on this in the Electronics section of the Forum.

My wife has state of the art duplicating equipment so burning c.d.s are not a problem. I'm not set up to record to disc as I would require to. And also this isn't a cookie-cutter course. Each student is different. So I'll be doing alot of recording.
If I have enough students to sign up for this I'll invest in some digital recording equipment, but, untill then I'm going to use tapes.

Mike,

I have some of your CDs and I enjoy listening to you play. I am probably and intermediate player but would like to advance to be a better player.

If you have information you can email about your new adventure, I would like to have it. Things like ::::::

1. How do you taylor a program to help someone you have never heard play?
2. Would a tape of a prospect playing be helpful in developing a program for him or her?
3. What cost is involved with your method of home study?

Ther are other questions but this will get me started considering. One thing for sure-------- if I could just play as good as your bad licks (which I have never heard) I would be a better player by far.

I would love to sign up, but tape is out of the question. We live in 2004 (almost) and CD burning is easy. Besides, most people who are on the forum are by definition connected to the internet. There is no reason why MP3 cannot be emailed to the subscriber and vice versa. And as tapes are extremely low fidelity, it should be no problem to compress the MP3 with a much lower quality than CD quality. Those MP3's are tiny, much smaller than the ones you get from Kazaa or whatever.
Obviously the one hour course could be cut up in smaller sections and maybe distributed over more than 4 lessons. And of course, the students need to be able to record sections themselves, which should be anyone's goal anyway. And if necessary, the students could still use tape (yuck!).

As previously stated, I do not have the equipment necessary to record to CD in my home at this time. As you also correctly assumed, not every student would be able to reply in this manner. I am not offering internet courses. I can see no reason for chopping the one hour lesson into smaller sections or for more than one lesson per week. I would assume that all tape recorders have a rewind button and that students can learn at their own pace. All this being said, if you are still interested in what I have to offer, email me.
