West coast steelers: Next San Jose jam Oct 25

Post by Bill Llewellyn »

Ok folks, the word is out.... the next San Jose jam is slated for Saturday, October 25! Read all about it here:

http://www.rahul.net/thinker/steeljam-oct2003.html

So pull out your calendars (or PDAs or whathaveyou) and set that date aside for some pickin', grinnin', and schmoozin' with fellow steelers and friends.

Please do send me a note (my email link is on the jam announcement page) if you plan on coming.

Come one, come all!

Looks like I have to sell my guitar after all. I hope I can hang on to it until then. If not, I will attend anyway.

I'm going to be there if at all possible this time. Perhaps I'll end up between David Wright and Pete Grant like I did the first time. Image

In the circle we had last November, I played right after JD Maness and Frank Carter. Now that takes and understanding group. Image

Bob,

Excellent! I hope Bobby (and Larry, too) can come again.

Incidentally, to all past attendees, please feel free to send me recommendations on how the jam might be improved in any way. (The one improvement we'd all like but isn't really available is a 1st floor room or an elevator!) Just post here or email me. Thanks.

It looks like our usual Band In A Box resources are thinner than last time. We do have a full blown desktop PC with BIAB coming but a laptop would be better if we could swing it. Does anyone have a laptop/BIAB/midi module combo (with a good collection of jam songs) available they could bring? Bobby Lee? Al Bates? Are you guys coming, and if so could you bring your BIAB stuff?

Thanks!

A laptop would be great. I don't really want to have to try and get a the desktop that Bill was talking about from my ex. We aren't getting along right now. I had to sell my laptop.

Plans are for me to bring my Mac Performa 6115CD with BIAB steelin' tracks, plus some accompaniment CDs. If b0b can come, he'll be bringing a laptop and BIAB. Same is true for Jim Baron, if he can make it. And Richard. So we have multiple BIAB alternates, but folks can't commit 100%. My Mac/BIAB and CDs sould do ok as a fallback.

I may be the sole source of BIAB with my Mac. That had me a little worried, but I just checked out my song library, and I have about 2500 tunes (some are redundant, I'm sure). I didn't know I had that many! I made a library list so looking up requests shouldn't take too long. And the Mac's built-in (QuickTime) musical instruments don't really sound all that bad, having just auditioned them again for the first time in a while. We should do fine. Still, for any of you attendees who usually bring your laptop/BIAB, please feel free to do so this time, too! You'll be faster at bringing up your tracks than I will with mine.

Well, the event started out slow, with only four steelers at one point, but it picked up during the afternoon. We had a Sierra 8 string lap steel, a MSA, a Emmons, a Zumsteel, and a bunch of Carters (at one point we referred to the one side of the room as "Carter Corner").
I brought my Zumsteel and had a great time trying to figure out what the heck I'm doing.
Unfortunately I had to leave just as Bobby Black showed up, so I'm sure I missed the highlight of the show. Charlie Wallace did a fine job up until then.
Thanks again to Bill for setting this up.

Thanks, Brad. My pleasure. It was fun, if a bit small. But then, in a smaller group, one's turn to play comes around sooner. Image Bobby was in great form, and Charlie is definitely one hot picker. Seems everyone had fun, and I think we all learned a bit, too. I'm glad my old desktop Macintosh held up through the day for BIAB tracks--it tried to overheat at about the time Bobby came by, but managed to keep going (talk about small miracles). (No wonder it got hot.... I have the thing packed full of add-ons and clock chipped to the max, but that's another story.)

Next jam I'll have to work harder to coordinate with people's schedules so that (1) more players can make it, and (2) I can have somebody else cover BIAB support, if possible.

I'm glad you guys had fun! Sorry to say no photos were taken this time, but here's a link to photos from the previous jam in April '03. Enjoy.

The jam was definitely big fun for me also. Anytime I get a chance to play steel for hours at a time I'm a happy guy! I enjoyed meeting some new players and revisiting with some of the guys I met at the previous jam. And Bobby is my steel guitar hero and the reason I originally started playing. Back in the early seventies I saw him play with
Commander Cody. After that show I decided that playing steel was what I wanted to do so I went home, sold my car and bought my first steel, a Gibson Electraharp.
Many thanks to Bill for doing all the organizing. <FONT SIZE=1 COLOR="#8e236b"><p align=CENTER>[This message was edited by Charlie Wallace on 27 October 2003 at 01:42 PM.]</p></FONT>

I'm real sorry I couldn't make it this time. Sounds like it was a lot of fun. Keep me on the list for next time.
