Maverick Jam?

Post by Randy Beavers »

I have an idea for the steel shows. Line 4 Mavericks up side by side on the stage and have a jam with them. No special trick pedals, just standard set-ups. The only difference being Emmons or Day set-up for the floor pedals. Then get the best players to play them. I think everyone would be amazed at what they would hear. Now that would be entertainment! It might not help the guitar company's business in selling extra knee pedals. What do you think?

Randy,
I have a Maverick someone can use for this jam, it sounds better than most of the current Pro models.

I think that's a GREAT idea. I've about decided that more than 2 kl's are just for bragging rights anyway. It's amazing what a good player can do with 3 & 1!

Randy, you KNOW I'm in on this one. I've heard some great stuff come out of Mavericks in the last few weeks. You played some of it, so has Smiley and Lloyd, and on course I've shot several learning videos on an early raised neck model. Yes Bob Knight, I know what you are saying about tone. These early ones do sound a lot better than most pro model guitars built today. I did a Diana Williams master recording on one a few years ago because it sounded so good.

OK Randy, let's get it on. I have the place and the video equipment and the guitars.! I love it!

Bobbe, this would be kinda our "IROC" series. You know , where all the cars are prepared the same. No special tricks or gimmics. Not that this is a race, but to show just what can be done with a basic student set-up. I must say though, I think Lloyd would have an advantage because his set-up isn't much more than that anyway. And I've never heard him run out of ideas! There's a moral to this story somewhere. And yes, those guitars sound great!

Which Maverick sounds better?

The Push-Pull Bret?

Or, the All-PULL Bart?

If I am reading messages right I come to the conclusion , A Steel doesn't have to have 14 pedals, 27 knee levers, and 6 effect units to be able to create a sound that would be acceptable to the public. Is it possible that the PLAYER is what makes it happen.????? ED Naylor Steel Guitar Works

Randy-Since the Maverick does have limitations, would it be to much to ask to allow a "WHOOPPE CUSHION" or button in case the player needs to get attention??? Ed

Why not make it really interesting and just use Fender Telecasters on your laps? Image Image

A cable maverick? Who made that? Sho-Bud didn't. Mavericks are "coat hangar steels".

Larry Cole? Because they don't tune up and the tones sucks. It would be like running the "IROC" with a Yugo instead of a Camero.

Ed Naylor, yes , you are correct, you DON"T need four knees a a hundred pedals to make great music. We remember Jerry Byry and Bud Isaacs don't we! (and a few others!)

Frank, Telecasters? They don't even work for -------,oh you are so silly!

Well, I recently sold my Maverick to a student, But I'm sure he would lend it for this. It has an actual piece of coathanger for one of it's "pull-rods," if you can call them that. It has two knee levers, so you'd have to disable one.

Maverick pickups were a little weak and noisy. If I still had mine I'd put a True Tone single coil on it, and I bet that puppy would howl with the big dawgs. Image

No David, no special pickups either. Sort of like "restrictor plates." I've had a few of those on my guitars and couldn't figure out how to remove them!

David, just send the pickup to Truetone or Bill Rudolph and have it rewound. It will still have the stock pickup then.

Hey Randy:

Can I bring my ZB 3+1 Student model? Sounds better than any Maverick I've ever played. And it plays pretty good, too.

Now to work on those slants...

I remember in St. Louis one year where 4 men took bottom line guitars to show how they would sound in the hand of a pro. I know Emmons played a frying pan and I believe Randy Beavers was one of the players as well. The other 2 players slips my mind. Before it was all over Speedy West got involved. He had Emmons down on his elbows with someone holding his feet in the air. They took another player and held thier guitars in the air while the men stood up and played. It was very humorous and their was even some pie in the face at the end of the show. Only Speedy West would come up with such a great idea...Paul King

Paul, the performance at the ISGC you are referring to, was Jeff Newman's idea. It was called "CREAM OF THE CRAP" It took place two years in a row.
